Besides studying different books on childbirth and reading everything you can on pregnancy, birth, and the newborn, finding a childbirth class which stresses the importance of natural (not meaning vaginal, but without drugs) childbirth.
Finding the right childbirth class can be confusing so the purpose of this web page is to make this task easier. Below I am going to list the different types of childbirth classes and try to define them in my own words. Prayfully this will help you.
LAMAZE Moms are taught different breathing patterns. The instructor is certified with their titles being ASPO. This method is usually seen in the hospital. It is required that you are a nurse if you are an instructor.
BRADLEY METHOD Moms are taught only one breathing pattern which is deep abdominal breathing. Emphasis is on natural childbirth and breastfeeding. Classes can be expensive but last 12 weeks. This is the method most used by midwives. The instructor is certified with their titles being AAHCC.
READ Moms are taught that fear produces tension which produces pain which increases fear and starts a fear/tension/pain syndrome. Deep abdominal breathing is taught.
INFORMED HOMEBIRTH Moms are taught various relaxation, breathing and comfort measures. A little bit of everything is incorporated.
SPIRIT LED CHILDBIRTH CLASSES Moms are taught various relaxation techniques by incorporating the Bible. Very good if you can find them.
Childbirth classes are only as good as the instructor. Before you sign up for a series ask for names of previous students. Also have a list of questions to ask regarding techniques of relaxation, etc. Some instructors can be new age in their methods of relaxation that is why it is important that you take the time to find out what the instructor believes.
My childbirth training was through ICEA and Ancient Art of Midwifery. Carla Hartley has a course offered, you might want to contact her and ask her about instructors in your area. I will list her on my link page.
Remember to read everything you can on relaxation and remember that God will never leave you and he will comfort you in your time of labor. Giving birth is not something you need to fear. Childbirth is a challenge, one in which you can be well prepare for. I also know that women torture other women with what I call "FISH STORIES". I call them fish stories because every woman likes to feel her birth was the longest, hardest, etc. Sound familiar, have you ever heard a fish story? The man that caught the biggest, fattest, etc. fish.
I CAN DO ALL THINGS THROUGH CHRIST WHICH STRENGTHENETH ME. PHILIPPIANS 4:13
