"Myths, Mistakes, and Mission - Tostmasters at the Crossroads"
Richard Moore, ATM
District 3 Strategic Planning Committee Chair

RICHARD MOORE

Background information for this presentation: In 1998 Richard Moore ATM, a marketing communications consultant by profession, developed a membership recruitment and retention program for District 3 Toastmasters which has the trademark –"Communication Skills for Life".

This is "outcome based program" defines tracks and resources an individual in a specific career or seeking a certain goal would find in the Toastmaster program to make progress toward their goal. Brochures have been developed for four career paths: "Professional Salesperson"; "Teacher / Instructor"; "Engineer"; and "Minister / Religious Leader". Each brochure describes the Competent Toastmaster program and specific Advanced Manuals which provide training for that career objective.

The new member joins Toastmasters to complete projects in the Advanced Manuals. As a recruitment tool even then newest member knows people in the professions targeted in the brochure- but has little or no knowledge of the Advanced programs.

To be an effective recruiter, the member simply needs to share enthusiasm for Toastmasters, invite the prospect to a meeting and hand over a brochure for the prospects area of interest. For the club, Communication Skills for Life brochures draw members who are pursuing goals which may take two years or more to complete.

Hopefully these new members will inspire the club to get serious about quality meetings that deliver the Toastmaster’s experience. Toastmasters works when individual Toastmasters do.
