Selecting a topic?
Allen's is the easy wAY
By Robert F. Allen, ATM, Cross Roads
Have you been assigned a manual speech, but didn't know what to speak
about? Many Toast-masters have had this experience.
In reviewing how successful members have selected topics, I have developed
a simple process to help anyone faced with the dilemma: What shall I speak
about to fulfill the objectives of my manual speech?
First: Look at the manual objectives. Are you required to give a vocal
variety speech? Does the manual require you to show what you mean? Knowing
the objectives will narrow the potential speech topics.
Second: Match your experience with those requirements. This alone may
show you what your topic should be. If you feel you have little "experience,"
explore your life. List your experiences, those connected with your educa-tion,
your vacations, your hobbies, your job. You'll be sur-prised, and enlightened,
at the range of topics available to you.
Third: Use a library. In addition to your city and your community college
libraries, state university libraries are also available to the general
public.
Fourth: Become more acquainted with other Toast-masters. Visit other
clubs. Attend area, division and district events. In this district there
is a wealth of experience. Many local Toast-masters are known internationally
within the organization. Help can be just a telephone call away.
Using any two of these techni-ques can make selecting the topic for
your next speech much easier.
International Convention
IT's closer than you think!
Both ways, and time is running tight to register for the special festivities
such a short distance away!
The 1989 convention will be held August 15-19 at Marriott's Desert
Springs Resort in Palm Desert, and that's only a few hours away. We hear
that many District 3 Toastmasters are plan-ning on making it a special
one for District 3, especially with District 3's joel Weldon as Colden
Gavel recipient.
It's a good chance for a fine vacation, too, at a first class resort
when their rates are at their lowest.
See your Toastmaster magazine for details and registration forms.

The flu season is in full swing. The only good thing about the flu
is that it's the only time I look like the picture on my driver's license.
The district recognizes achievers
From the records of Glenn Knudson, DTM, Educational Lt. Governor, come
the names of these Toastmasters who have achieved one of the educational
goals for the period ending April 30, 1989. District 3 is very proud of
their accomplishments.
