CHIRICAHUA BIRDS

There have been at least 368 species of birds recorded from the Chiricahuas. With a wide variety of different habitats, from desert to conifer forest, it is no wonder that the Chiricahuas boasts one of the richest bird faunas in the United States.

Below are examples of just a few of the birds found in the Chiricahuas:

The Montezuma quail on the left is found in pine-oak-juniper woodland and open oak woodland areas. This quail is not frequently seen and is not common. Its camoflaging coloration and it's habit of sitting perfectly still until one is about to step on them before taking flight with a loud flutter makes this bird very difficult to find.

The Bridled Titmouse on the right is a small, lively bird found in oak, juniper woodland and riparian areas. Usually seen in the banches of trees and low shrubs where it hunts for small insects. Its call is similar to chickadees. Titmice and chikadees are in the same family. Both the Montezuma quail and the Bridled Titmouse are year round residents of the Chiricahuas.

The Western Screech-Owl on the left is one of several species of owls found in the Chiricahuas. It is a year-round resident found in oak-woodland to conifer forests. It feeds primarily on insects and small rodents. This owl is nearly indistinguishable from the Whiskered Screech-Owl except for its call.

The Blue-throated Hummingbird on the right is one of the largest of at least 15 hummingbird species that have been seen in the Chiricahuas with a body length of 5 inches. They are commonly found in oak-woodland, riparian and pine-oak woodland and pine forest. They typically migrate south for the winter but a few spend the winter in the Chiricahuas, depending on hummingbird feeders for food and on warmer winter days they also feed on a few insects.

The Black-chinned Hummingbird is one of the most common hummingbirds in the Chiricahuas. They are found in desert areas to pine forests. Migrating from the south in the spring, they nest in woodland and riparian areas. The nests are small and made from spider webbing and plant fibers and camoflaged with moss, lichens and other materials. The female typically lays two eggs and as the young grow the nest expands. The young are fed a mixture of small insects and flower nectar. Only the female is involved in raising the young.
