Sundancer, aged 35
Partner of Laura
I'm sending you a pic or two of Sundancer, age 35+. Sundancer is
an Arabian mare that I rescued from going to the killers this past summer.
When I first rescued her I would let her have the run of the property and
somewhat CT'ed her to teach her her boundaries on the property and to not go
out the open front gate. Most recently, she has been "Grandma" to my three
newly adopted Mustang weanlings. These are the babies that didn't know how
to eat grain when I brought them home. By utitlizing Sundance in the
capacity of CT exercises, they quickly became curious and then wanted to join
in.
I'm planning on getting some photos of the babies and her as they are
waiting for me to come out and "play". I don't know how much time Sundancer
has left. She came to me in very bad shape (bad hind end, extremely "sway"
backed very thin and needed alot of dental work) and during the summer she
was doing better and better. Now that we're having very cold temps though
(18 degrees the other night), she's been having alot of problems with her
poor old back end. She's been down a few times and could not get up without
major assistance from my husband and I (usually in the middle of the night
when I'm out wandering around with the horses). I've found her down with the
babies hovering around her. She usually wears 2 blankets now and has
standing wraps on to. She's also on Flex Free, so we'll just have to see
what happens.
Anyway, I'll send more pics as I get them. More then anything else,
Sundancer is proof of a horse with a very strong spirit and will to live. I
call her my "old lady horse" and I think she looks to me as friend and
protector.
You can barely see "Dancer" in the foreground, but she has been the greatest
horse to put in with these Mustang youngsters. She has taught them social
etiquette in spite of the fact that teaching them is difficult for her
sometimes because she has trouble getting around. You better believe these
kids never challenge her though! She is Grandma and when she tells them
something, they listen! I think that having these children to teach is whats
keeping her going!
