In 1998, Kellogg's cereal company began the "Part of the Game" promotion. This was a promtion for several professional leagues, including the NBA and WNBA. During this promotion, Kellogg's made a mail-away offer on Frosted Flakes, Fruit Loops, and Smacks cereal boxes for NBA and WNBA card sets. There were two sets, which were parallel to each other, that could be collected. They were the gold set and the silver set. Both sets consisted of 56 cards each. Cards 1-40 were of NBA players and produced by Upper Deck. Cards 41-56 were of WNBA players and produced by Pinnacle Brands. Ideally, both sets were identical, with the exception of the foil stamping which indicated whether it was gold or silver. The real difference was in the way the cards were distributed. The gold set was offered for sale as a whole upon completion of an order form and payment of about $9. The silver cards were mailed out randomly in packs of 5 upon sending in two cereal proofs of purchase as well as a small fee to cover shipping expenses. Therefore, the silver set was much more difficult to complete. I have both WNBA subsets pictured in their entirety below. Enjoy!
