Herge was born on 22 May, 1907 in Belgium, Brussels. From 1914 to 1918, the young Georges Remi was a
pupil at the Ixelles primary school. He already drew stories in pictures at the bottom of his exercise books.
He was very much bored in his college years in Saint-Boniface College in Brussels.
In 1921 he joined the Scout Troop and received a nickname "Curious Fox." His first drawings appear in his
school scouting magazine called Jamais assez, and starting in 1923 in Le Boy-scout belge which was the
monthly magazine for the Belgian Boy Scout. From that point on, he used to sign his comic strips with the
name Herge corresponding to his initials R.G.
He started working for Le Vingtième Siècle in 1925 in the subscription department. After his return from the
military in 1928, he became editor-in-chief of Le Petit Vingtième.
On January 10th, 1929 tintin and Snowy were born in Le Petit Vingtième. In 1930, Herge also created two
other characters called Quick and Flupke, and in 1935 he created three other characters called Jo, Zette and
Jocko for Coeurs vaillants.
Casterman Publishing House, in 1942, asked Herge to adopt his eariler books to fit in 64-page adventure
books for Tintin that they would publish. Herge continued this work on his first books.
In 1950, he started creating Explorers on the Moon which needed very detailed work. Herge came together
with number of collaborators and founded the Herge Studios.
Herge found his long lost friend Chang Chong-Chen in 1982 who inspired Herge to write The Blue Lotus 45
years ago; and Herge wrote another book called Tintin in Tibet where Chang will take part.
Herge was suffering from anaemia for several years. He went to hospital as a result of pulmonary failure and
died on March 3th, 1983 at the saint-Luc University clinic on the outskirts of Brussels.
To fulfill Herge's desire,that Tintin would not be given to another artist, his wife Fanny replaced Herge
Studios with Herge Foundations.
