The following day, Misty strolls down Victory Road looking for a specific
person. The water trainer heads off the normal path into some trees that line the road in
order to avoid any Pokemon battles. Misty comes to the other side of the trees to find
the small cove of water that borders Victory Road. Next to the water’s edge the trainer
finally comes across whom she was looking for.
The other trainer turns around to greet her guest as she asks, “Misty. What
brings you way out here? Looking for a good Pokemon battle?”
The Cerulean Gym leader stands next to Nina replying, “No, that’s not it.”
“Then what?” the young trainer asks.
“I really need some help, Nina.”
The female trainer does not ask anything further knowing that Misty intends to
explain, but raises an eyebrow in interest.
“It’s Ash. He’s been acting real weird lately.”
Having lost interest in the subject, Nina simply answers, “I’m not a counselor,
Misty. You’ll have to find someone else to help with your boyfriend problems.”
Getting real worked up, Misty goes on, “That’s not it, either!”
Nina sits down looking at the crystal blue water not responding.
Misty has a seat as well while she continues to explain, “Ash has been training
excessively all day and night. It doesn’t even seem like he eats or sleeps anymore. It’s
just training and more training. He’s becoming obsessive.”
Nina just answers flatly, “It’s not too unusual for trainers to have such a strong
passion.”
“Not like this,” Misty adds with some urgency. “It’s unhealthy. Ash needs
boundaries. I’m sure if I can find someone to beat him, then maybe he’ll uncover some
humility.”
Nina gets back up and walks over the placid water. “I’m sorry, Misty. I can’t
help you.”
“But you can,” the water trainer urges. “I know you can,” she asks further while
getting up.
“Wasn’t it you and Ash who beat me in Cherrygrove?” Nina queries, not looking
back.
“Aw, don’t tell me you’re still upset over that?” Misty answers a little shakily.
“No. I’m not upset over that at all,” Nina carries on. “I couldn’t beat him then,
and if you say he’s been training like I’ve heard, then I don’t think I can win now.”
“But if you and Richie pooled your talents then-” Misty tries to begin.
“Richie’s gone.” Nina replies quickly.
The gym leader only gives out a little, “huh?”
“He left, Misty,” Nina says trying to keep any emotion out of her words. Looking
halfway back she finishes, “Said he was going to take some time off from Pokemon
training.”
The water trainer sees now that Nina cannot be swayed. She turns around to
leave as Nina adds, “I’m sorry that I can’t help.”
Misty comes back into the small area of trees with Brock waiting for her.
“No luck,” the water trainer states somewhat disappointed. Now wondering why
Brock did not reply or even move, the gym leader asks, “What’s the matter, Brock?”
