Prologue

The Hanson family, consisting of Zac, Taylor, Isaac, Jessica, Avery, Mackenzie, Diana and Walker, were in an auto accident. Walker, Jessica, Avery and Isaac were all killed. Without their manager or Isaac, Mercury records killed off the six-record deal the Hansons had. Taylor, Zac, Diana and Mackie moved to Worthington, a small suburb in Columbus, Ohio, in a upper-middle class neighborhood called Brookside Woods, in a small suburb of Columbus, Ohio.

Chapter I

8:40 a.m.

"Class, we have a new student today." Mr. Carpenter said. "This is Zac. I hope that you'll treat him with respect. Zac, your desk is over there."

Zac kept his head down and sat at the desk. He put his stuff into the small space. The popular people giggled. Alex frowned.

Born Alexandra Wallace, she was 12, had strawberry-blond hair, hazel eyes, and fading freckles. She was very tall, and had big bones but was still slender. She had poor eyesight, and had to wear contacts. Her full, pouty, lips frowned at the sound of the popular people tittering. She took out a piece of paper, and started a note to Zac. It read:

Hey-

Don't mind them. They're ttc's (think they're cool). They laugh at anyone. Sorry bout your family, and if you ever need to talk, my phone number is 766-1018. Oh yeah, my name's Alexandra, but you can call me Alex.

Alex (duh)

She folded up the note, and walked by his desk. She inconspicuously dropped it to him. He looked at her strangely, wondering, 'Why would anyone here want to talk to me?' He opened the note, read it, and realization whacked him in the head. 'My family.' The night came flooding back to him. The ice, the truck, screaming, "Ike! Noooo!!!" And the screeching of the tires, shattering glass, ambulance sirens, everything. He forced it out of his head.

'Can't think about the crash. I just made a friend. This is cool. I'll call her today.'

He turned and smiled at her. She grinned back. Then her eyes became far away, thinking of something that he tried to read in her eyes. But they were blank.

Then Mr. Carpenter told everyone, "Time for gym. Line up!"

Alex walked over to her friend's desk. She whispered something. Her friend, named Caitlin, frowned, then whispered something back. Alex sighed.

"I knew you'd say that. But really. You can't judge a book by its cover, as much as you'd like to."

Caitlin frowned. "But their mu-"

Alex abruptly stopped her. "If you say anything else, he'll know who we're talking about. I know, you think it sucks. But you really should get to know him before you make a decision. Do you wanna be as snobby as you-know-who?"

Caitlin shook her head.

"Good. Now let's go to gym."

Zac just stood, looking out the window.

"Zac, we need to go now." Alex said, pulling his arm.

"What? Oh. Yeah, I'm coming."

She waited. Caitlin sighed and started walking. Zac and Alex followed.

"So tell me. Where do you live?" She said, her long legs moving gracefully.

"Brookside Woods. 2234 Fernleaf Lane." He rattled off.

"Oh yeah, I saw you from my window. I live in 2228."

"Wow." Zac said. "That's pretty cool."

They reached the gym, and Alex sat down and pulled off her shoes.

"Uhh..what are you doing?" Zac said.

"Take off your shoes, we're doing the obstacle course today."

Zac pulled off his Airwalks. Alex ran in. Zac grinned and followed her.

2:30 p.m.

Alex stepped onto her bus. Zac followed her, not sure. He handed his note to the bus driver. She took it and frowned.

"You sit with her." She pointed at Alex.

Zac shrugged. She ran to the back, where Kim was sitting.

"Kim! Zac has to sit with us now." She said, hyper, because it was a Friday, and she was hyper during the day.

On the busride, Kimberly Taryn Reidinger formally met Zachary Walker Hanson. They talked until their bus stop came, and then they all got off, laughing. Alex pulled Zac off the bus, and across the street. They walked home, and then Alex yelled across the street, "Call me at 3:30! Bye!"

And then ran into her house.

"Hi!!" She yelled.

"Hi, Hun." Her Mom replied.

"I'm expecting a call at 3:30." Alex said, halfway up the stairs.

"Okay, dear."

Chapter II

3:49 p.m.

"Hey"

"Hey"

"Soo… do you have AOL?"

"Huh?"

"America Online."

"Oh.. yeah."

"What's your screen name?"

"I don't have one yet. It just kind of sits there."

"Well make one."

"Okay. I'll do it later."

"Come over. We can watch movies"

"Like what?"

"Mom got some chick-flicks…blah, blah. Oh, here's a couple. The Craft, Scream, and Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion."

"Okay. Sounds cool."

"Bye"

"Bye"

Alex grinned and hung up the phone. She thundered up the stairs, and skimmed her room. She made her bed a bit neater and walked back downstairs. The doorbell rang, and Zac stood outside hugging himself to keep warm. She opened the door, and took a deep bow.

"Do come in, Master Hanson." She faked a butler-sounding voice.

"Thank you Jeevs." He replied in his best English accent.

She laughed and took his coat.

"What do you want to watch first?"

"Uhh…I dunno. You pick."

"Okey-dokey. We're watching The Craft."

"Don't spoil it for me."

"Shut up."

He plopped down on her couch. She sat down on the opposite side. After the movie was over, Zac grinned. "I like it."

"Yeah. It's my favourite scary movie."

"Hey.. do you want to go see a movie at the theater?"

"Like what?"

"Well…like.. uhh…like… Scream 3."

"They'll card us."

"I'll get someone to buy our tickets for us."

"Okay. Then what?"

"We'll walk in with a bunch of other people."

"Okay."

7:30 p.m.

"That wasn't as good as the original."

"No kidding."

Alex and Zac walked in silence to her house.

"See ya, Zacky-wacky."

"Shut up. You sound like one of those teenies."

"You shut up. It's your fault. You made the music."

"Fine. Bye stupid."

"Bye."

As time grew by, Alex and Zac became best friends. They did everything together. They shared secrets, went to see things, laughed and comforted. But eventually, like many boy/girl relationships have in the past, they both found themselves in a difficult position. They really liked each other, but if they did go out, and break up, an irreplaceable bond will be broken.

"Hey Zac. She's upstairs…go on up."

"Thanks Mrs. Wallace."

Zac walked up the stairs. He walked up the stairs, and heard strands of music coming out of Alex's room. Her door was open a crack, and there was a sweet scent. He peeked through the crack in her door.

'Incense' he thought.

Sure enough, there was a miniature burner with incense inside. Alex was standing by her dresser, in jean flairs and no shirt or bra. Her bare back shone in the light of her room, provided by Christmas lights she had hung up. She pulled on a bra and bent down, and pulled out a white shirt. She quickly put it on, and then Zac walked in, acting like he hadn't been watching her.

"Hey." He said, grinning.

"Hi." She replied.

Zac noticed her Discman on her dresser.

"What are you listening to?" he asked, frowning.

"Nothing," she said immediately.

"What?"

"Nothing!"

"Come on let me see." Zac opened the Discman.

"No, Zac…"

He stared at the CD inclosed in the machine.

"Middle Of Nowhere." Zac said, voice cracking.

"I- I- I'm sorry." Alex said, sitting him down on her bed beside her.

Zac began to cry, first silently, then sobbing into Alex's shoulder. She put her arms around his back, rubbing up and down. He did the same, feeling the line of her bra, the fabric of her shirt. He finally stopped crying, and looked up at her eyes. She looked at his tear-stained face, and slowly they moved in, until their lips touched. A weird sensation went up and down Zac's body, and Alex felt him shiver. They broke away after a few seconds. He held her hand, gently massaging her fingers.

"Zac.. if.. if we are going out, and if we break up, we'll always be friends, right?"

"Right."

Chapter III

2:09 p.m.

"Hey. Zac. I've never been to your house. Can I see it?"

"Sure."

One week had passed since Zac and Alex's first kiss. They were now better friends than ever. Alex was going over to Zac's house to meet the rest of his family for the first time.

"Alex, this is my mom, Diana Hanson."

"Hi Mrs. Hanson. Nice to meet you. How are you?"

"I'm fine, thanks. Alex, Zac has told us all about you. It's a pleasure to finally meet you."

"Thanks Mrs. Hanson."

Alex smiled a short smile before Zac dragged her upstairs to meet Taylor, Mackie, and Destiny Renee Hanson, the newest addition to the family, born 01/22/97. The first room the entered was the one of the sleeping baby.

"Shh. She's sleeping." Zac reminded her.

"Okay." Alex whispered. "Awww..isn't she cute?"

"We'd better go."

"Alright."

The next one was Mackie. "Hey Mackie." Zac said. "Come here and meet Alex."

"OoOoO is this Alex? Yeppers, you were right Zacky. She is pretty!" Mackie exclaimed in one big breath.

"Well thank you Mackie." Alex said, smiling at the little kid clinging to her leg.

"Okay...time to meet Taylor." Zac said, dragging Alex away from Mackie, jealous that he wasn't getting any attention and that a three year old was making moves on his best friend.

As Alex stepped into the room, Taylor stood up and looked her up and down.

"Jordan Taylor Hanson!! Stop checking out my best friend!!" Zac said, angry.

Alex started laughing so hard she fell on the floor.

"What's so funny?" Taylor said, standing over her.

"Nothing." Alex replied. "Sorry to dissapoint you two, but out of all three of you, I'd have to choose Mackie. I'm sorry." And then she cracked up again. Chapter 2
