To Speak...

Like all other time periods, the Regency had its own special brand of common language. Of course, one ought never to use it, but I shall still inscribe it here for your perusal. You must promise me never to use it in Company, however!

To fly up into the boughs - to become excited
To make a cake of one's self - to act the fool
To be in (high) alt - to be delighted
A looby - a silly person
A nodcock - a stupid person
Top of the trees - very good
An abbess - the madam of a house of ill-repute
A cyprian - a woman of the evening
A dandy - an overdressed man, usually one who delights in being so
A corinthian - an athletic man
The ton - High Society
The demi-monde - people one oughtn't associate with as they are somewhat...objectionable
In trade - someone who works for a living - a negative term
The cut direct - to snub someone
Beyond the pale - it is too much!
A quiz - an odd person - a negative term
To quiz - to search Quizzes out
A pink of the ton - a very obvious dandy

I fear that that is all the knowledge that I may impart on this subject for the moment, for I do grow faint to think that I have put such things up for the Public to see! Please do remember not to disgrac me and use thes words when you are in Company!
