The story opens with a sad woman looking at the trinkets in her room and thinking about the last words her love said to her before departing to Alpha Century. Mostly it is about the vast numbers of people upon earth and the imigration problems. The story then flashes to this same woman, Shoko, having lunch with her friend Akio. They seem to have a light teasing relationship that in many things implies that they are good friends. Shoko shows Akio a ad she has clipped out of a book. It says:Help Wanted, I want you if you are taking a pessimistic view of life, no parents, no wife or husband, this is Skelmersdale's Lab. Akio thinks she is crazy to even consider this, but Shoko really doesn't have anything to live for. It turns out that Akio himself has been working for this company creating artificial planets, the newest one is habitated with little naked fairies who lounge in the sun. His boss wasn't too please with this, apperently that is not what he pictured for a new Earth. Akio is then talking with his boss about the newest outlandish project, when he spots Shoko. He is throughly shocked when he learns that she has a agreed to try it and attempts to get her to quit, which she won't. The boss interviews Shoko to make sure she is the ideal "rabbit" for the expriment. She tells him of how she had a man she loved and they were both going to migrate to Alpha Century, but Shoko couldn't because she found she was with child. She tried to abort it in time to travel with her love, but it was too late and the government only gives people one chance to migrate.
The expriment is to electronically teleport people from one place to another. Akio picks Alpha Centrury as the destination. He convinces his boss, because after all it is the closest place. The expriment is successful and unlike all the other short stories this ends on a conclusive note. Shoko sends Akio a telegram from Alpha Century with a wedding ring on her finger and Akio just smiles.
