Summary

Self-motivated, team player, actively looking to be a member of an innovative Plant Biology research group.  Recently returned Peace Corps Volunteer, with two years experience in applied agricultural methods within a third world context. Evenly exposed to traditional plant breeding techniques and molecular biology techniques, as well as scientific method and experimental procedures, while earning a bachelor’s degree in Plant Sciences.  Familiar with several computer software applications on both Microsoft and Macintosh operating systems.

Agricultural Extension Agent, US Peace Corps Volunteer (May 1997 - April 1999)

Lesotho, Southern Africa.  Facilitated workshops and conducted demonstrations which encouraged rural home garden creation and effective application of harvested products to satisfy nutritional requirements of women and children, guided the development of small income generating activities using available resources, advisor for small livestock management, assisted several rural schools with proposal writing to receive funding from international non-governmental organizations.

 

Honor’s Thesis, Department of Plant Science (August 1995 - December 1996)

Tucson, Arizona.  Designed and maintained independent experiment, under the supervision of Dr. S. Smith to compare phenotypic variation among accessions of Digitaria californica, a native perennial Arizona grass species; extensive data collection, analysis of data using specialized statistics software; modeling of genotypic variation using correlation of phenotypic data with geographic data.

 

Undergraduate Researcher, Department of Plant Science (May 1994 - August 1995)

Tucson, Arizona.  Characterized phenotype and genotype of two Agrobacterium transformed lines of Arabidopsis thaliana in Dr. K.A. Feldmann’s laboratory, using various molecular biology techniques such as electroporation, Agrobacterium transformation methods, preparation of tissue for light microscopy and electromagnetic spectroscopy, restriction-fragment-length-polymorphism and southern blotting procedures.

 

Student Intern, US Department of Agriculture (May 1991 - August 1992)

Phoenix, Arizona.  Assisted with research on alternative methods of whitefly control in Arizona cotton under the supervision of Dr. D. Akey, entomologist; provided assistance for field collection of samples; independently designed and maintained greenhouse experiment focusing on effects of CO2 level on cotton crops; performed data compilation using specialized computer software.
