Geology
Let us compare Modern knowledge about mountains with few verses, among
many in the Quran, that deals with this subject.
"Have We not made the earth as a wide expanse And the mountains as pegs?"
(The Meanings Of The Holy Quran 78:6-7)
A large number of modern Geography books, when discussing mountains, only
describe the parts which extrudes above the surface of Earth. This is because
they are not written by specialists in Geology.
The verse above describes the mountains as pegs or stakes which have
roots into the ground (AWTAD in Arabic), this description exhibits
knowledge of the deep foundations of geological folds. Modern Science states
that both continental and oceanic mountains, even though are different
in their composition and the way they are formed, have one thing in common,
they both have roots to support them.
In the case of continental mountains light, low density, material forming
the mountains are extended down into Earth as roots where in the case of
oceanic mountains there is also light material supporting the mountains
as roots, this light material is not light because of its composition,
as it is the case with continental mountains, but because it is hot, therefore
expanded. From the view point of density both are doing the same job as
roots to fix and support the upper parts of the mountains.
Here, as in the case of many other topics, the objective observer cannot
fail to notice that the Quranic Description of mountains as pegs was supported
with modern Geological knowledge. A major function of the mountains, which
was not discovered until recently, is stated clearly in the following verse:
"And He has set up on the earth mountains standing firm lest it should
shake with you"

Dr. Frank Peres was the president of The Academy Of Science in the United
States, he was appointed as the scientific advisor to former U.S president
Jimmy Carter. He is the co-author of a Geology text book entitled "Earth"
, this text is considered as the basic reference text in many universities
around the world. On page 488 of this text, mountains are illustrated as
wedge like shapes, likewise in the illustration on page 413 the exposed
part of the mountain is shown as a small part of the whole, whose roots
are deeply entrenched into the ground. With regards to the function of
mountains Dr. Peres writes on page 435, that Mountains play a great and
important role in the stabilization of the Earth crust. This is exactly
what the Quran described 1400 years ago in the second verse above (Verse
16:15) .
"And it is He Who spread out the earth and set thereon mountains standing
firm…Behold, verily in these things there are Signs for those who consider!"

"and that those on whom knowledge has been bestowed may learn that the
(Quran) is the truth from thy Lord"
