Fiona Apple, Britney Spears, Celine Dion, the Dixie Chicks, and Cher have all been cited for their less-than-glamorous apparel by noted fashion maven Mr. Blackwell, who included the music artists on his annual list of the worst-dressed women.
Blackwell, a former designer who has been compiling his worst-dressed lists for 40 years, announced his 1999 "winners" during a press conference held on Tuesday in Los Angeles. Topping Blackwell's list was one of his perennial favorites, Cher, followed by French-Canadian chartreuse Celine Dion, British monarch Queen Elizabeth, and happy homemaker Martha Stewart.
The critic reserved some of his harshest words for Apple, who was fifth on his list, noting that singer looked like "a kinked and curled Kewpie Doll wrapped in a collection of yesterday's fatal fashion frights."
Britney Spears was cited next, with Blackwell commenting that "this belly-baring songbird is better heard than seen." Actresses Sarah Jessica Parker, Jennifer Anniston, and Cameron Diaz all followed the teenage star at numbers seven through nine on the worst-dressed list. The Dixie Chicks rounded out the annual register of fashion rogues, as Blackwell took the country group to task for appearing like a "trio of truckstop fashion tragedies trapped in a typhoon."
