Port Nicholson - High ground was first
spotted by the survey party aboard the exploration ship 'Tory' at
about noon on 16th day of August 1839. On 20th September after
entering the channel, the 'Tory' was boarded by 2 chiefs of the
local tribe.
The next morning after much deliberation, the Maori chiefs
announced an end to the Canabalism and war. Colonel Wakefield and
his party were told
"Go look at the land & see how you like it" .
Thus, the begining of Wellington, the settlement.
