Mr Mef was the first Wu Tang solo project all those many
moons ago, and his sophomore joint has been very very
highly anticiapated by his multitudinous fans. And why?
Remember gems like "Bring The Pain" and "Method Man"?
And then there was the crossover hit with the remix
featuring Mary J Blige, "All I Need". This was huge and
managed to thrust the man with a penchant for many aliases
into the pop spotlight. Attracting all kinds of audiences
without compromises his style, he's always been loved
by women for anything he does, even though he has never
chased this kind of fame.
Johnny Blaze stays true to himself and drops another Wu album, not the pop album it could have been (successfully). Check the Rza produced "Suspect Chin Music", and Inspektah Deck surprises by contributing two on "Spazzola" and "Elements". "Cradle Rock", a track with Left Eye, sounds like it could be a pop crossover, but Left Eye departs from the usual to drop a grimy hook, and is almost unrecognisable like this and that fits perfectly with Meth who rips it up. There is a sing-songy track with D'Angelo and Trackmasters production but isn't as bad as I thought it would be. "Break Ups 2 Make Ups" is surprisingly okay with a low key guitar while still looking for radio play. The single "Judgement Day" is here, and with the intro prety much sums this up. It is catchy though, and with the video filmed in Paris in a space age fashion you can understand where this is going. The chorus is the of the "10...9..." variety and will have people singing along to it. Respects are paid to the past with "Retro Godfather" which is reminiscent of those halycon days but without going anywhere, while the expected Redman team-up "Big Dogs" is firin' on all cylinders. Erick Sermon's production fits this perfectly but does not really work as well on "Step By Step" with an almost familiar-sounding track. I was surprised not to see another rock collaboration like there was with the dire one with Texas recently, and there are many many skits here! Featuring names like Chris Rock on a humorous tip, then name checks with Donald Trump and Janet Jackson. But it is the music that overshadows these thankfully, and displays Meth's improved lyricism and rectifies the mistakes on the first album "Tical", that this artist himself admits was rushed. This album is pure solid which you can see in a song like "Grid Iron Rap" and his confidence in himself by drafting in outside production on "Play IV Keeps". We also get the usual Wu guest appearances like Inspektah Deck, Streetlife (who features quite a lot) and Cappadonna who talks about the allure of pu**y on "Sweet Love". This is a solid if unspectacular album, with elements taken from the previous one and new ideas experimented with (Meth himself produced "Judgement Day" with the all the sound effects!). Not bad at all. - Roni |
