Nate Dogg - "G-Funk Classics Vol. 1 & 2"  Dogg Foundation

 West Coast G-Funk R&B

For so long, Nate has been responsible for providing the lovely hooks on so many artists songs. Remember "Regulate" with Warren G? That was the one that garnered his vocal talents international attention. He possesses a lovely deep voice and now after a break from Death Row, and setting up his own imprint, Dogg Foundation, he finally has his voice heard.

Unlike many R&B crooners, Nate Dogg doesn't just sing a hook with a rapper, he vibes with them. Check how he has his lyrics on the Warren G collabo, "Nobody Does It Better". Of course, the tasters "Never Leave Me Alone" with Snoop (a single), and "These Days" with Daz (Gang Related OST) were previously available, they are still good songs.

This album is entitled Vol. 1 & 2 because there are two discs, and this is good in some ways and bad in others. There is a healthy Death Row influence in the form of many of the guests. 2Pac's appearance on "Me & My Homies" being particularly notable. Kurupt appears on the classy "First We Pray", a hark back to the old days.

"Scared of Love" is a quality R&B tune dealing with relationships, and sounds different to all of the songs out nowadays. This is most likely attributable to his style of singing that seems to be unique. Where it doesn't work is on a song such as "Crazy, Dangerous" that sounds cliche and tired. Another problem is the whole volume of material means that some songs are almost re-hashing other songs in a different way. The subject matter is not very wide-ranging resulting in this situation.

The West Coast playa aesthetic is also evident on certain songs as the Sam Sneed produced "Bag O' Weed", which is pretty self-explanatory, and "Because I Got A Girl", a ditty blatantly showing his disregard for his girl in favour of messing around.

A big flaw with this album is the amount of tracks: it is definitely a chore to listen to the whole album in one go! But of course, it means there is something here for everybody, so if you liked Nate Dogg's previous music, you won't be disappointed. He sings beautifully throughout as well as writing his own songs. - Roni
