Prince Paul, the man behind Stetsasonic, the early De La
Soul material, and the Gravediggaz, amongst others steps
upto the plate with something new and original, and will
probably leave many people scratching their heads wondering
why it hadn't been done before. This is a whole concept album,
a movie, featuring many actors. What does this mean?
Well the eccentric Paul, the creator of the bane of modern
day albums, skits, has taken it to another level.
The album really has to be listened to the whole way through to understand the plot and the context in which the songs appear. Casting the Juggaknots Breeze as an aspiring artist named Tariq trying to get his stash together for a studio session to complete his demo tape for the Rza. Sha plays True, a close friend of Tariq's working for Chubb Rock's Mr. Large, no surprises in what he deals with. Well, True leads his boy down the wrong road in the quest for big bucks, but from here I will leave the story untold. Big names appear in the form of Big Daddy Kane ("Mackula's Theory"), Kool Keith, Everlast ("Men In Blue") as a cop, De La Soul as crackheads, and you would need to know who they are and what they have done in their own careers to understand why Kool Keith is a sexually deviant gun smuggler. De La provide the first single of "More Than You Know" over a disco influenced beat that is cool and these add to the story. This is definitely a great record, one that I shouldn't be surprised that the quirky Prince Paul came up with. It is difficult to rate this alongside other records as there is not really anything like this out there ... Some people found the previous album "Psychoanalysis" difficult to comprehend, this is much simpler and will yield much more to listeners. It is the new archetypal hip hop soundtrack. - Roni |
