Chris Plummer is an anti - racist anarchist activist currently being held captive by the state of Texas. In the late 80's and early 90's, Chris was involved in the squatting movement of New York's Lower East Side. After this, he hit the road with some friends and traveled across the United States meeting various revolutionary groups along the way. It was during this time that Chris and others founded the United Anarchist Front, a group that used direct action to resist oppression from the ruling class.
In 1993, Chris took part in an action against the American Front, a fascist group with a record of extreme violence. To keep them from spreading their hate literature within the neighborhoods and schools of Houston, Chris had broken into one their house's and stole and destroyed nazi propaganda. Police found Chris's fingerprints at the scene and he was convicted of 'breaking and entering with an intent to burglarize' and sentenced to 15 years in prison. They even went as far as to try and bring up ridiculous charges of attempted murder against him. The bogus charges were dropped, however, when Chris couldn't be terrorized into turning in his friends.
Once imprisoned, Chris got right to work. He started a group called Cell One at Huntsville. One of Cell One's most important projects was the Texas Prisonera Anarchist Lending Library. All kinds of books and literature were donated to the library by many different individuals throughout the U.S. and also from organizations such as Books - Through - Bars in Philadelphia and Books - To - Prisoners in Seattle. Such a library that provided radical and progressive literature by and about African - Americans, Chucanos, Native - Americans, Asian - Americans, and working class whites to whomever wanted it presented a threat to white supremacist gangs and prison authorities because they know all too well as anyone that ignorance is a splendid way to keep people divided. Unfortunately, in March of 1997, prison guards confiscated and disposed of the entire library as well as many of Chris's personal possessions under the guise of investigating possible "gang activity". Also, at this time, a nazi prisoner gang increased the intimidation and attacks against Chris and, on one instance, broke his jaw in an attempted murder.
In May 1997 Chris was transfered to the Hughes Unit in Gainesville, Texas. Chris reported that this facility had tremendous racial tension and violence. The Texas Department of Criminal Justice chose Chris's new "home" keeping in mind that there was a paid "hit" on Chris's life by nazi prison gangs at this unit. Soon after being transferred, Chris found himself in 'lock down' (Administrative Segregation) for reasons unknown. On August 26 Chris was, once again, under attack from prison staff. The following is an account of the happenings directly from Chris's own words:
On 8 - 26 - 98 I was removed from my cell, all my property was torn apart and all of my paper and envelopes were taken from me, about 20 minutes after I was taken out of my cell (this time without any clothing!). I was placed in the shower for approximately 2 hours. Then I was forced to walk (butt ass naked) out of the pod down the hall to F - pod to high precaution cell #76. I was later given a set of clothes and told that the Lt. wanted to speak with me. I was taken down the hall to a room where all my personal property was on the table. A Sgt. told me (with a video camera on) that I was being charged with conspiracy to smuggle guns into the prison. This is bullshit. Since then I have been forced to strip and receive call searches every 30 minutes. I have not been allowed to have my property, not even an envelope. My legal work has been destroyed and my legal mail opened.
Now let me give you some background info - there's a brother here named Toby Collins who, two years ago, was busted with a .38 caliber pistol. Now, he was convicted last month. Well, on 8 - 23 - 97, three days before I got popped, I sent out a notice on behalf of Cell One to Frank San Miguel, Black Autonomy and Raze the Walls to intiate the Emergency Response Network cause he was being threatened with death and he needed some help. I then let Warden Moya know I was in firm support of Mr. Collins and that I would pursue all legal means if he was assaulted or harmed in any way.
I have been pulled out of my cell and average of 13 times per 8 hour shift. I have not had a solid hours sleep in three days. They refuse to allow me to even have stamps or writing materials, and I have no doubt that soon they will carry out some of their threats. Of course, there is a lot I can't put into words as they will manipulate it
Since that time Chris's life hasn't gotten any easier. While the prison authorities have relented somewhat in their daily harassment, both Chris's incoming and outgoing mail is being heavily censored. Letters from his support groups have been seized as "gang - related", as were his letters to those groups. Neither Chris, nor the support groups, were informed about this by prison staff. Even worse yet, Chris has been paid visits from the Bureau of Alcohol and Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) in late October '97 and has been informed that they are pressing charges against him for gun smuggling, a charge which would tack another 30 - 40 years on to his current sentence.
We should all work together to fight for Chris's rights, and for his freedom, before it is too late. We should make his fight our own and stand up to the oppressive state which has taken yet another revolutionary from our movement. Act now! YOU could be next!
