JOSEPH MARTIN THOMAS: Joseph was born August 17, 1844 in Steuben Co., New York. He died Sept.12, 1927 in Prarie Farm, Barron Co., Wisconsin. He married CHRISTINA MEDDERS on July 2, 1868 in Chickasaw Co., Iowa. Christina was Born May 18, 1845 in Elkhart Co., Indiana. She died June 25, 1921 in Clear Lake, Polk Co., Wisconsin. Daughter of Aaron MEDDERS and Esther SAILOR. Both Joseph and Christina are buried in the Clear Lake Cemetery in Clear Lake, Wisconsin. Joseph was a Union soldier in the Civil War. He was a Private in CO. D 146th Regiment of the Illimois Infrantry. Joseph was living in Lenark, Carroll Co., IL. at the time of his enlistment. He served from Aug. 29,1864 to his discharge on July 8,1865. According to his granddaughter, Mildred Emma THOMAS MOE. he was taken prisoner and was sent somewhere in the South. He escaped with a black man, who knew the swamps in the area, and with the man's help they found their way back to the North and their regiment. Joseph stayed with his unit until the end of the war. Joseph was a guard at the funeral Abraham Lincoln. He recieved a medal which is in the Clear Lake Museum, Clear Lake, WI. The family owned property in 1870 in Bradford Twp., Chickasaw Co., Iowa. In the 1880 Federal Census they were living in York Co., Nebraska. The family then moved to Waterville Twp., LeSeuer Co., MN. They lived there from 1885 thru 1900. Joseph owned a farm in this area at the time. The family then moved to Wisconsin around 1901 and lived in several counties, Dunn Co., Polk Co., and Barron Co., According to records found in New Haven Twp., Dunn Co., Joseph owned a farm there from 1901 to 1916. The description ie NW of NE, Sec. 18, Town 31, Range 14. 40 Acres. Mrs. Mildred THOMAS MOE, granddaughter of Joseph, related this story. "The THOMAS boys came to Wisconsin and bought land close together. The area was all wilderness and they had to clear the land and cut a road into the property. They built log homes for their wives and children from timber they cut to clear the land. The wives and children came by train after the homes were built. The boys also built Joseph and Christina's home. This area was great logging country and for awhile was called Thomasville." The Bible in the Scrapbook is a story told by Joseph when he gave this Bible to his Grandson, Wilber. It goes as follows- "This Bible was in the shirt pocket of Stephen Yorden, who was a Brother-in-Law of Joseph Thomas". "Joseph Thomas told me he was wounded in 9 Battles during the Civil War. He was hit in his heel and this Bible was in his shirt pocket on the left side. The rifle ball hit and went part way through then glanced off. He was also almost blinded when a shell exploded near him".
CHARLES EDWARD: Charles was born May 18,1869 in Nashua, Co. Iowa. He married 1st. Lucy ?. He second married Nellie TRYON. He had 3 children with Lucy, Earl, Willard and Ethel. There is nothing more on the children of this family. In the 1905 State Census, Charles and Lucy were living in Dunn Co., WI. He was a Brick Mason.
ROBERT HARTLAND: Robert was born Aug. 23,1870 in Iowa. He married Christina HEIBEL abt. 1902. He died in 1958. Christina was born 1881 in Minn. She died in 1939. The Wisconsin State Census shows that Robert owned a farm in New HavenTwp., Dunn Co., WI. He was a Stone Mason by trade.
ADELIA JANE: She was born May 17, 1872 in Iowa. She died in 1917 and is buried in the Clear Lake Cemetery, Clear Lake, Wisconsin. She married Fred REYNOLDS about 1895. According to the 1909 Wisconsin Census, Dela and Fred owned a farm in Dunn Co., WI. They had 2 known children:

NELLIE (Sadie)ELLEN: Nellie was born 6 Feb.1888 in Minnesota. She died in 1967 and is buried in the Clear Lake Cemetery in Clear Lake, Wisconsin. She married Peter TOLLEFSON on 15 Aug.1914. There was 1 child that died at birth.
