David Byrne: There's a lot of place names in the songs, not only on this record. In other words Jackson, Greenville, Lake Charles. All your records there's specific place names. Are you singing about that place or somebody from that place? Lucinda Williams: Well, I think I've just always been tied into areas and the people there and because when you're writing a song it says a different thing depending on whether you're talking about Greenville, Mississippi or Iowa City. It's going to kind of evoke a whole different kind of feeling to the listener. David Byrne: All you have to do is name that place and boom. Lucinda Williams: Right. You've got a picture so, it's really just another way to use description when I'm writing because anything I can put in the song that's going to help describe what I'm trying to get across, I try to do that. David Byrne: Would that include putting names of cars? Lucinda Williams:Yeah. Names of cars. Names of towns. David Byrne: Records that somebody heard. Lucinda Williams: Yeah. Like instead of just driving in a car, driving in an El Camino or, you know. That just all kind of comes natural to me. David Byrne: You said you spent some time at Pioneer Town. Lucinda Williams: Oh yeah. David Byrne: I was out there once. It's out by Joshua Tree, right? Lucinda Williams: Right. That's a great place out there. David Byrne: It's kind of a strange little place. Lucinda Williams: It is. Kind of surreal. David Byrne: Just a little pioneer village. Like a movie set from westerns, left over from westerns and now people live in it. It's kind of slightly run down but really nice. Lucinda Williams: Yeah. And a place where biker bands will come and play. You know that kind of biker bar. David Byrne: And it's just miles, pretty much miles from anywhere. Lucinda Williams: Yeah. David Byrne: You think being in a particular place inspires writing? Lucinda Williams: Yeah, it does for me. I love it out there and ever since I've discovered that place I've wanted to go out to the desert more. David Byrne: Spend your 30 days in the desert or whatever. Lucinda Williams: Yeah. I want to be out there, around all that. I just love the environment of that area. David Byrne: That's that being out there where there's nothing. Lucinda Williams: Yeah.
