Interview 1: JOHN HIATT: Let's talk a little bit about Paradise. You talk about, sometimes the song comes out of some places you've actually gone. You grew up in Illinois but you had family in Kentucky? JOHN PRINE: Yeah, my dad and mother are both from Kentucky. I come from a family of four boys and we were all born and raised just outside of Chicago. Our dad raised us kind of like any time we were going back to Kentucky. So, we spent some of our summers there or vacations. We still go there. I just came back from a family reunion near Paradise. JOHN HIATT: So, that is where the family was from? JOHN PRINE: Yeah. It was a neat old town. Looked like it was out of a Disney movie. And sometime in the late sixties a coal company and the TVA they wanted to build something there. So, they just bought out the town and tore it down and everybody that lived there was more or less glad because they got about ten times what their property was worth at the time. But it's just kind of sad to see the town go. So, I wrote that song just kind of for my dad cause I knew he would connect to it. I wanted him to know that I was a songwriter. Like I could actually write about something that he knew about and turn it into a song. JOHN HIATT: It's a beautiful song. JOHN PRINE: Thanks. Interview 2: JOHN HIATT: Who have you brought with you today? Can you talk about some of the players you've got? JOHN PRINE: Yeah, well, they've been with me for a while. I've got Dave Jacques on bass and Dave has been playing bass with me since The Lost Dogs Tour. We started out in I guess I don't know when that was. '95 or something like that. '94, '95. And Jason Wilber's from Bloomington, Indiana and Jason has been out with me for a couple of years now. Both of these guys work out real good with me. They kind of know when I'm going to make a mistake and they make it along with me and all of a sudden it sounds like something good. JOHN HIATT: That's some plan. JOHN PRINE: And we have a guest singing. I've got my guest, Iris Dement is going to be singing the duet with me. I'm a huge fan of Iris. JOHN HIATT: Wonderful voice. And she writes songs as well, doesn't she? JOHN PRINE: I love Iris' songs. I really do. And so I'm just glad to be out here. I'm going to get to see -- Iris out on tour with us -- see her do a show and she's going to come out and represent the duet record with me.
