"But the comforter, even the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, He shall teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said unto you." ( John 14:26 )

INTRODUCTION

Everything that God has revealed to us is important. The fact that he gave it to us by inspiration and preserved it to the present time is indication enough that we need to be familiar with all portions of his word. Of course some parts of the Bible will be studied more than others, for their practical applications are easier to see and the need for such knowledge is more immediate. However, no phase of Bible teaching is to be willfully neglected in our study. We should study what the Bible says about the Holy Spirit.

I. THE HOLY SPIRIT IS A NEGLECTED BIBLE THEME.

A. IT IS CERTAINLY A PROMINENT BIBLE SUBJECT.

No one has ever been saved without the Holy Spirit, nor will anyone ever be. Those who are in denominations that feature error on the Holy Spirit are studying and those who never had an interest in religion before want to know now.

B. THE SUBJECT HAS BEEN GIVEN A SUBORDINATE PLACE IN OUR THINKING. Teachers and preachers have routinely shied away from the subject and therefore have not impressed with its importance those whom they are trying to teach. The result is that much of what the Bible says about the Spirit is either lost on our minds or shrouded in a cloak of superstition. We are intimidated by those who are louder than our selves, or maybe, the volume of neglected material has us buffaloed.

C. THE HOLY SPIRIT HAS BEEN LEFT IN OBSCURITY TOO LONG. In this course we want to study the Holy Spirit, especially in the light of some of the controversy that surrounds him.

II. A HISTORICAL SKETCH OF EMPHASIS IN OUR TEACHING.

A. EIGHTEENTH CENTURY TEACHING PLACED EMPHASIS ON THE FATHER.

B. NINETEENTH CENTURY TEACHING PLACE EMPHASIS ON JESUS.

C. TWENTIETH CENTURY TEACHING SEEMS TO ACCENTUATE INTEREST IN THE SPIRIT.

D. WILL WE ENTER THE 21RST CENTURY UNPREPARED?

III. IGNORANCE ABOUT THE HOLY SPIRIT.

People in general know something about God and Jesus, but much of what they think of the Holy Spirit comes from the imagination and superstition. It is difficult to clear away the bad information so the truth will be realized. One must come to the subject with no textbook but the Bible and with a complete willingness to let the Bible say what it says, and to make such interpretations and applications as come evidently from a careful and prayerful study of the entire Bible on this sublime theme.

Very few people think of the Holy Spirit as a person. If people would learn to think of the Holy Spirit as they do God and Christ, much of the confusion would clear away. He is a DIVINE BEING, one of the Godhead.

IV. THE BIBLE IS THE ONLY SOURCE OF INFORMATION ABOUT THE HOLY SPIRIT.

A. WE MAY LEARN OF GOD IN NATURE( Psa. 19:1-2 ).

B. NOT SO WITH EITHER JESUS OR THE HOLY SPIRIT.

C. WE MUST GO TO THE BIBLE, WHERE THERE IS A HOST OF INFORMATION.
