By His Stripes We are Healed

TEXTISA. 53:4-61 Pet. 2:21-24

INTRODUCTION:

A.      “BY HIS STRIPES …” SUMS UP THE GOSPEL AND GREATNESS OF GOD.

          (1 Pet. 2:21-24;  1 Cor. 15:3;  Isa. 53:1;  Matt. 20:28;  2 Cor. 5:21).

B.      PROPHESIED BY ISAIAH.

 ISAIAH TEACHES US ABOUT …

I.      THE FACT OF HIS SUFFERING.

A.      MANY WORDS AND PHRASES INDICATE THE EXTENT OF HIS SUFFERING.

          1.       vs. 5 – Wounded, bruised, chastisement, stripes.

          2.       vs. 6 – laid on him the iniquity of us all.

          3.       vs. 7 – oppressed, afflicted.

          4.       vs. 8 – taken away, cut off out of the land of the living, stricken.

          5.       vs. 10 – bruise, put him to grief, his soul an offering for sin

          6.       vs. 11 – travail of his soul, bear their iniquities.

          7.       vs. 12 – poured out his soul unto death, numbered with transgressors, bare the sin.

B.      HIS SUFFERING WAS 2-FOLD.

          1.       The physical suffering of crucifixion.

          2.       The chastisement of our peace – punishment for our sins (Rom. 6:23;  Isa. 59:1-2).

C.      HOW GREAT THE WICKEDNESS OF MAN! (Gen. 6:5;  Isa. 64:6;  Jer. 17:9).

D.      HOW DARK THE WORLD WITHOUT GOD (Eph. 2:12;  Luke 22:53).

E.      AN ERRONEOUS ESTIMATION OF HIS SUFFERING LEADS TO ERROR.

          1.       He did not suffer on account of his own evil (1 Pet. 2:21-23).

          2.       Where his suffering is minimized, so is his love (John 15:13).

II.     THE VICARIOUS NATURE OF HIS SUFFERING (vs. 4-6, 8, 10-12).

A.      HE SUFFERED FOR SINS NOT HIS OWN (Heb. 4:15;  1 Pet. 2:21-23).

B.      THE PERFECT SACRIFICE (1 Pet. 1:18-19).  Without spot or blemish.

C.      IT WAS FOR OUR SINS (1 Cor. 15:3;  2 Cor. 5:14-15;  1 Pet. 2:24).

III.    THE ATONING PURPOSE OF HIS SUFFERING (vs. 11; 1 John 3:5).

A.      HE ACCOMPLISHED WHAT ALL THE SACRIFICES OF MAN UNDER THE LAW OF MOSES COULD NOT DO (Heb. 10:3-4,  11-13).

B.      JUSTICE IS SATISFIED (Rom. 3:23-26).

IV.   THE BLESSED RESULT OF HIS SUFFERING (vs. 5, 11-12).

A.      BY HIS SUFFERING WE ARE RECONCILED TO GOD (2 Cor. 5:18-19).

          1.       God does the reconciling (vs. 18).

          2.       It is through forgiveness (vs. 19).

B.      BY HIS SUFFERING WE ARE MOTIVATED TO START AFRESH (2 Cor. 5:17).

          1.       Led by faith, appreciation and love (Rom. 5:5-8;  2:4).

          2.       We love because … (1 John 4:19;  John 14:15).

CONCLUSION:

A.      HIS SUFFERING IS OUR VICTORY (Isa. 53:10-12;  Rom. 7:24-25).

B.      HOW HIS VICTORY CAN BE OURS (Acts 2:24, 36-41).
