By His Stripes We are Healed
A. “BY HIS STRIPES …” SUMS UP THE GOSPEL AND GREATNESS OF GOD.
(1 Pet. 2:21-24; 1 Cor. 15:3; Isa. 53:1; Matt. 20:28; 2 Cor. 5:21).
B. PROPHESIED BY ISAIAH.
A. MANY WORDS AND PHRASES INDICATE THE EXTENT OF HIS SUFFERING.
1. vs. 5 – Wounded, bruised, chastisement, stripes.
2. vs. 6 – laid on him the iniquity of us all.
3. vs. 7 – oppressed, afflicted.
4. vs. 8 – taken away, cut off out of the land of the living, stricken.
5. vs. 10 – bruise, put him to grief, his soul an offering for sin
6. vs. 11 – travail of his soul, bear their iniquities.
7. vs. 12 – poured out his soul unto death, numbered with transgressors, bare the sin.
B. HIS SUFFERING WAS 2-FOLD.
1. The physical suffering of crucifixion.
2. The chastisement of our peace – punishment for our sins (Rom. 6:23; Isa. 59:1-2).
C. HOW GREAT THE WICKEDNESS OF MAN! (Gen. 6:5; Isa. 64:6; Jer. 17:9).
D. HOW DARK THE WORLD WITHOUT GOD (Eph. 2:12; Luke 22:53).
E. AN ERRONEOUS ESTIMATION OF HIS SUFFERING LEADS TO ERROR.
1. He did not suffer on account of his own evil (1 Pet. 2:21-23).
2. Where his suffering is minimized, so is his love (John 15:13).
A. HE SUFFERED FOR SINS NOT HIS OWN (Heb. 4:15; 1 Pet. 2:21-23).
B. THE PERFECT SACRIFICE (1 Pet. 1:18-19). Without spot or blemish.
C. IT WAS FOR OUR SINS (1 Cor. 15:3; 2 Cor. 5:14-15; 1 Pet. 2:24).
A. HE ACCOMPLISHED WHAT ALL THE SACRIFICES OF MAN UNDER THE LAW OF MOSES COULD NOT DO (Heb. 10:3-4, 11-13).
B. JUSTICE IS SATISFIED (Rom. 3:23-26).
A. BY HIS SUFFERING WE ARE RECONCILED TO GOD (2 Cor. 5:18-19).
1. God does the reconciling (vs. 18).
2. It is through forgiveness (vs. 19).
B. BY HIS SUFFERING WE ARE MOTIVATED TO START AFRESH (2 Cor. 5:17).
1. Led by faith, appreciation and love (Rom. 5:5-8; 2:4).
2. We love because … (1 John 4:19; John 14:15).
A. HIS SUFFERING IS OUR VICTORY (Isa. 53:10-12; Rom. 7:24-25).
B. HOW HIS VICTORY CAN BE OURS (Acts 2:24, 36-41).
