Each Month, I will try to highlight
a particularly neat game, and provide as many photos, and as much info, as I can.
DANDY CANDY GAME, made by Built-Rite, 1950's...One of many CANDYLAND ripoffs that appeared once CANDYLAND became popular.
This is an unusually large game (13" x 20") for this company, which normally made small, poorly built games. The board is bright and colorful, and included 4 wooden pawns, a candycane spinner, and a large board. Places like Lollypop Land, Candy Cane Lane and Gumdrop Islands are especially evocative of CANDYLAND.
But you really can't blame Built-Rite... CANDYLAND was originally released by Milton Bradley in 1949, and became popular upon subsequent releases in the 1950's and 60's, and there were a host of imitators: Games like GAME OF SUGAR PLUMS, LOLLI-POP LANE, WONDER LAND and even STEPS TO TOYLAND all tried to imitate the feeling of wonder that CANDYLAND evoked, but to no avail... Still, DANDY CANDY is a cute game with cute artwork. (Just look at that deer!) Value: $30 - $40
