The New KTU 103.5 FM has put together the ultimate preview show for today's hottest recording artist and it comes in the form of KTU's Up Close and Personal with Ricky Martin.
Martin's ``Up Close'' performance is set for Wednesday, September 22 at the Theater in Madison Square Garden -- adjacent to the larger MSG arena where Martin is scheduled to perform three shows in late October.
``Once again, KTU proves we can achieve the impossible,'' says Frankie Blue, KTU vice president of programming and operations. ``KTU's Up Close and Personal gives our listeners the opportunity to see Ricky perform in an intimate environment! Undoubtedly, it will be a special night.''
The limited number of seats for the show -- underwritten by AT&T, Kodak and the U.S. Army -- are available only to listeners who win tickets on KTU, beginning today. The station plans to announce an opening act and special guests in the coming weeks.
KTU's Up Close and Personal marks Martin's first New York City concert since the chart-topping hit single ``Livin' La Vida Loca'' from his self-titled CD -- Ricky Martin (C2/Columbia) -- became the biggest selling number 1 single in the history of Columbia Records.
Martin's music also garnered nine nominations for the upcoming 1999 MTV Video Music Awards (September 9).
``KTU and our listeners have supported Ricky for years -- we're huge fans,'' adds Blue. ``He was a member of the KTU family well before he became a certified mega star and we congratulate him on his success.''

As the world continues to "live la vida loca,'' Pepsi-Cola North America today announced it has signed pop sensation Ricky Martin to support the brand's new Goza El Sabor(Joy of Cola) campaign in the Latino market.
As part of the agreement, Martin will appear in print, television and radio advertising featuring the Goza El Sabor theme. The U.S. advertising will be created by Dallas-based agency Dieste & Partners and the first television commercial -- titled "Monitors'' -- is expected to break this fall.
The agreement builds on the company's existing relationship with the celebrity, who appeared in a commercial for Pepsi-Cola International earlier this year. In addition, Pepsi has signed on as a main sponsor of Ricky Martin's North American tour, slated to kickoff on October 21 in Miami, Fla.
"Ricky has been with Pepsi since his early days in the business,'' said Dawn Hudson, Senior Vice President, Strategy and Marketing, Pepsi-Cola Company. "In addition to being a big star, Ricky embodies the true spirit of Pepsi. He's likable, exciting, optimistic and spirited, and his intensity will propel the ''Goza El Sabor" campaign to new heights.''
"I've been part of the Pepsi Family for ten years,'' said Ricky Martin. "I'm proud of the work that I've done for the company and look forward to building on this relationship in the years to come.''
Earlier this week, Martin recorded his version of the Goza El Sabor theme, and began filming his first television spot supporting the campaign. The commercial will be directed by Wayne Isham.
Known for his eye for unique and captivating images, Isham recently directed Martin's blockbuster video "Livin' La Vida Loca.'' In addition, he has directed videos for such well-known artists as Will Smith, the Backstreet Boys, Janet Jackson, Metallica and the Rolling Stones. This year, Entertainment Weekly named Wayne Isham one of the 100 most creative talents in entertainment today.
Later this year, Pepsi-Cola International will feature Ricky Martin in its "Ask for More'' campaign for brand Pepsi in overseas markets.

As we reported last week, Martin is the subject of a photo layout in the September issue of the fashion magazine "W".
In the brief essay accompanying photographer Pablo Alfaro's snaps, Ricky ponders the question, "What is sexy?" while the pictures capture the (sometimes) bare-chested singer in bed and hanging out with his Chihuahua, Titan.
The spread certainly won't hurt the singer's status as a heartthrob, and neither will the emotional philosophies he shared with our friends in MTV Europe during a recent interview.
"I am a romantic," Martin told MTV Europe. "It's something that, unfortunately, we're losing in society. But the simplicity of a rose, the simplicity of a poem to present to someone you're attracted by, I think it's something.... It helps a lot. It accelerates the process. Why lose that?"
That Titan is one lucky Chihuahua.
The September issue of "W" will be on newsstands nationwide on August 20. The mag will hopefully tide fans over until Martin himself appears live (and in the flesh) on his upcoming North American tour, which kicks off on October 21 at the Miami Arena.
