In the name of God, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Introduction

`Jesus replied, "The first is this; Hear O Israel!
The lord OUR God is Lord ALONE.
You shall love the Lord with all your soul,
with all your mind, and with all your strength."'
[Mark 12:30]

"God bears witness that there is no god except He,
and so do the angels and those who possess knowledge.
Truthfully and equitably, He is the
absolute god;
there is no god but He, the
Almighty, Most wise."
[Quran 3:18]

The First Commandment quoted above forms the foundation for Islam or Submission. "Worship God Alone" has been the message of all of God's messengers. The word Submission is not the name of a religion, but rather it is a description. Submission is the total submission and devotion to God Alone. Thus anyone who can bring himself or herself to believe in God within the confines of the first commandment is a submitter (In Arabic: Muslim).

"Millat Ibrahim"
The Religion of Abraham

The religion of Submission (Islam) and all it's religious duties (Contact Prayers, Zakat or obligatory charity,  Fasting and Pilgrimage) were introduced at the time of prophet Abraham. Islam is called "Millat Ibrahim" (The religion of Abraham) throughout the Quran (2:130, 135; 3:95; 4:125; 6:161; 12:37-38; 16:123; 21:73; 22:28).  Subsequent prophets like Moses, Jesus, etc. practiced same religious duties.

Religious practices in Islam were well established before prophet Muhammad started his mission of  delivering the Quran (8:35, 9:54, 16:123, 21:73, 22:27, 28:27). Verse 16:123 calls prophet Muhammad a follower of prophet Abraham.

Idolatry

God's words in the Quran proclaim idolatry as the only unforgivable offence. The Quran defines various forms of idolatry. Among the idols listed are humans (7:194), any claim of  intercessor (10:18), prophets and messengers (3:79), ego (25:43), religious leaders and scholars (9:31), and following words other than those in the Quran for religious law (6:114).

The we revealed to you this scripture, truthfully,
confirming previous scriptures, and superseding them. [5:48]

Say, "Whose testimony is the greatest?" Say, "GOD's.
He is the witness between me and you that this Quran
has been inspired to me, to preach it to you and
whoever it reaches.
Indeed, you bear witness that there are other gods beside GOD."
Say, "I do not testify as you do; there is only one god,
and I disown your idolatry." [6:19]
