Actually, "Gothic Period" is just a term
which refers more to the style of architecture prevailent during the 1200's
than an actual historical period, but I had a gap in the timeline
between the dark ages and middle ages pictures and just thought I'd throw this one in.
This is one period of time that I researched to death. I HAD to, because a lot of
sculptures and paintings done during this time were all pretty much
the same. Even with the more wealthy people - where you'd usually find more ornamentation in their
dress - they all generally wore capes and simple tunics, and very little
head-dress other than hoods or draping fabrics. The only variation I found was with women, who
often wore a cloth over their head with a circlet or headband. Sometimes they wore a squarish
hat covered with a draping cloth, with varying degrees of decoration.
One thing I do like about this one is the soldiers in the left foreground. The dog in front
of them is a Borzoi. I realize this breed may not have existed during this time but hey,
artistic license.
I think they're pretty dogs anyway.
The woman directly above the top monk on the left is about to sneeze.
The couple right under the archway above the soldiers:
I'll leave that up to the viewer's judgement. They're actually doing one thing, but some
people might see them as doing another.
All the way to the far right foreground. The
gentleman drooling is mentally challenged. The guy above him is about to pour a beer on him and
is pointing to him as they both enjoy a good laugh at his expense.
The old barmaid in the right
foreground: The guy behind her just made a rude comment and his girlfriend is telling him in a
friendly way to stop teasing her.
The woman whispering in my ear is naked, and the guy behind
her is somewhat shocked at this display.
