I was originally going to make the 1860's through the 1880's a transitional one, but I came across some fantastic, detailed 1870's dresses on the internet, enough to justify an entire barpic dedicated to one decade. 5 of the most detailed ones are in the left foreground. The guy tipping his hat to one of the ladies unintentionally came out looking a little like Spaulding Gray.
the little girl in the left foreground: she's touching her mom's sleeve going "Mommmmy? This lady is trying to give me candy."
That lady and the one above and to the left of her are sisters. I made their faces similar.
It has gotten a little rough in the bar in the past, so the bartender has started carrying a big machete slung over his back. He's tried to train Barney the St. Bernard to be his backup, but Barney has proven to be too friendly. The woman looking at him likes him, but is mostly bored at the guy talking to her.
The couple right above the bartender are based on the real Charles and Caroline Ingalls (of "Little House on the Prarie" fame). I found a picture of them on the internet.
The woman in the foreground with the light hitting the underside
of her face; I got the idea from a Toulouse-Latrec painting At the Moulin Rouge1892-95 (below). She's drinking a bottle of "Capt. Corney's Laudinum" (laudinum being an opiate commonly used during this time).
I also used a few figures from Renior's Luncheon of the Boating
Party 1881 (below) One of my favorite impressionist works.
