HEALTH NOTES OF INTEREST

There is a support and discussion group for people with Fanconi dogs. It is full of helpful ideas on how to cope, how to get those pills in, how to deal with both the successes and the failures. If interested click here

While on the subject of health here are some DO’S AND DON’TS IN CARING FOR OUR DOGS DURING THE SUMMER:

DO’S

Provide shade for outdoor dogs.
Inspect dogs regularly for bites, wounds and parasites.
Rinse chlorine off dogs that swim, and dry their ears. Dogs can get swimmer’s ear.
Provide your dog with high-quality food that is low in fat.
Keep clean drinking water available at all times. Give the dog water you would drink yourself.
Make sure your pet has an ID tag on at all times.
Protect against fleas and ticks.

DON’TS

Give dogs table scraps or bones
Let feces pile up in the yard. Flies lay their eggs in feces
Let vaccinations lapse.

HEALTH INFORMATION FROM MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY

The Mammary Carcinoma Project, part of a larger study of canine cancer at MSU College of Veterinary Medicine, is aiming to uncover the specific genes that cause breast cancer in purebred dogs. If you have a pedigreed, purebred dog that has been diagnosed with breast cancer, please call Dr. Richard Reid at MSU (517) 432-0144. The answering machine is on at all times, so can call anytime of the day or night to leave a message. All that is needed from the owner is a copy of the biopsy results, the dog’s pedigree and a DNA sample (via cheek swab) from the dog.

BRAG AND CRY

Ralph Bradshaw’s black and white boy Kiwi has been ranked #4 in the USA lure coursing by FAN magazine. A big "high five" to Kiwi.
Sherry Steven’s Nowatta’s Resurrection of Dune went Best of Breed, over a special, April 30, 2000. That deserves a good tummy rub.
