Basenji Fanciers of Greater Phoenix

JUNE, 2001

Traditionally the month of June is when we have our Annual Meeting, and this year we are making it a special event for all members by giving out the awards earned by our great little Basenjis and having a Potluck. In keeping with this plan to make it a special event, we are holding it on Sunday, June 17, 2001 at 3:00PM. The location is not at the traditional location either.

This gathering will be held at the home of Nancy and Ron Wilson. The

address is 8307 E. Camelback Rd., Scottsdale. The meat, soft drinks and rolls will be provided. We are asking those planning to attend to bring one of the following, hot side dish, salad, or dessert in an amount sufficient to serve 10. This is not a black tie and tails affair, but a casual, fun event. Adults and children are welcome. We regret that we cannot include the four-legged members of the family. Please plan to attend. We are aware that it is Father's Day but felt this would be a nice day out for Dad and family.

The Club is busy putting together the plans for our Specialty in October. It is being held in conjunction with the Kachina All-Breed Show on Oct. 19th, at Estrella Park in Goodyear. Our Specialty chairman, Joanie Koppin, at this time has need of an Advertising Chairman for this event. This person will need to be willing to actively solicit vendor contributions in exchange for advertisement space in our Specialty catalog. She needs

someone in this position as soon as possible. If you are interested please contact Joanie as soon as possible at (480) 832-0091 or e-mail rafikikita@att.net You need not be a member of the Club to fill this position. As we get closer to the day of the Specialty, we will be asking for volunteer help in several areas of preparation. Volunteers do not need to be members of the Club. So, if you are called on to help, please show you support, say "yes" and volunteer!

BIG NEWS IN THE DOG WORLD---The Crufts Dog Show in England, which is like the Westminster Show in this country, was held last week. Much to our delight, a Basenji was picked Best in Show. His name is Ch. Jethard Cidevent. His call name is Cid. It is just great to finally get some recognition of our breed!

Locally we have had some winners, too. Ch.

We were sadden to receive the news of the abandoned Basenjis in Clovis, Calif. There were over 40 dogs found, and of those about 15 were Basenjis. BRAT will be working to find homes for these dogs, but in the meantime, if you can help by sending money for food and medical bills it will be appreciated. If interested in helping, go to www.basenjirescue.org/donate99htm

Recently we sent out an urgent request to find a home for a Basenji whose owner suddenly passed away. We are happy to report that one of our local Basenji families has taken Ruby in to her home. More happy news--- two more of our rescue Basenjis have been placed in new homes. In the last newsletter I promised to tell you about a most amazing and resourceful Basenji. The owner of this very smart Basenji noticed the dog limping about. She kept her eye on the dog for a couple of days and there was no improvement so she took the dog to the vet. The vet checked her over and said he could find no reason for the limp, but he did find an abscessed

tooth and it should be removed. After this diagnoses was made and after the tooth was removed, the dog ceased to limp!

HEALTH WARNING: Cocoa Mulch, which is sold by Home Depot, Foreman's Garden Supply, and other garden supply stores, contains a lethal ingredient called "THEOBROMINE". It is lethal to dogs and cats. It smells like chocolate, and it really attracts dogs. They will ingest this material and die. Theobromine is the ingredient that is used to make all chocolate, especially dark or baker's chocolate which is toxic to dogs. Final Note. Flo Havens has made the most spectacular queen size quilt. All the material has different designs of different dogs. The Club is selling raffle tickets for the quilt to raise money for new lure coursing equipment. Tickets are $5.00 each, or 6 for $25.00. The raffle will be held at our Specialty on Oct.19th. You need not be present to win. To see a picture of this beautiful quilt and information on how to purchase tickets, click here.

SUMMER BREAK---There will be no meeting or club event during the month of July, so there will be no newsletter. We will be back on board the first of August. Wishing you all a "cool" summer.

DON'T FORGET OUR AWARDS POTLUCK AND PLEASE MAKE PLANS TO ATTEND. THAT DATE IS JUNE 17th AT 3:00PM AT THE HOME OF RON AND NANCY WILSON AT 8307 E. CAMELBACK RD. SCOTTSDALE.

Late lure coursing news: Joy just received the premium list from the Desert Fun Bunch for their lure coursing event. It is an AKC approved event and is a Junior Courser test only. They are recommending that your dog have experience running with other dogs before entering the Trial. It is being held Sunday, June 17 at Crossroads Park, Gilbert, AZ. Pre-entries close at 6:00pm on Thursday, June 14. Entries on the day of the event close at 6:00AM on the day of the trials. Racing will be completed whenever all entries have raced. For more information, e-mail them at desertfunbunch@aol.com. We realize this is the same day as our Awards Event but ours doesn't start until 3:00PM, so I hope please still come to our meeting.

Have a great summer!
