District Historian

"I joined Toastmasters because I thought I had a problem talking to people. After my ice breaker, 20 members of Valley Toastmasters k-n-e-w I had a problem," says Glenn.

Glenn joined Valley Toastmasters, Club #5056, as a Charter member in 1983. Six months later he also joined Paradise Valley Toastmasters, #4770. Two years later he served as president of both clubs and ended the term with Paradise Valley recognized as the District 3 Outstanding Club of the Year (an award it would continue to win for five consecutive years), the club with the highest membership increase (PV added 44 new members in one year to reach 74 members), the district's highest member retention percentage, the District's top Club Management Plan club, as well as winning the District 3 Newsletter Contest, and winning a Toastmasters International Top Ten Club Newsletter Award.

Glenn named District 3's Outstanding Toastmaster of the Year for 1985. In 1987 he was appointed as the district's first Public Relations Officer.

Finding ways to market Toastmasters seemed to have always been on his mind and resulted in several promotions, including the creation and production of the district's Club Location Maps which have been in use for over 15 years, organizing a three month "Open House-A-Month Campaign" in which 31 clubs participated --- generating numerous newspaper announcements. He was awarded a District 3 "Innovation and Creativity" award in 1988.

His club newsletters have achieved five International Top Ten Newsletter Awards, a Third Place, a Second Place, and a First Place Club Newsletter award for Valley Toastmasters, a First Place of Paradise Valley, and a First Place for Six To Niners' (an advanced club) "The Diggings."

One example of the value members receive when they volunteer to serve their club is illustrated by Glenn in one of his speeches; "I was computer illiterate when I volunteered to do my club's newsletter. As a result of learning how to use a computer, a year later I was using it to produce advertising jobs."

Learning html was timely. He caught the opening wave of the "internet" as the District's first Web Chair and  build the foundation of its current web site.

In 1994 Glenn was honored with the District's highest honor, the District 3 Russ Backus Distinguished Service Award.

During his membership he has also served the district as its Speechcraft Committee Chair, Eastern Division Lt. Governor, Roadrunner co-editor, District Web Chair, and District Historian.
