SADLER

Edward & John SADLER

In 1827, Edward and brother John were convicted of sheep stealing in Hampstead.
The trial was held in Middlesex,England

According to the trial notes, they were both born in Berkshire.
They were sentenced to life and were transported to
New South Wales, Australia on board the "Phoenix" in 1828.

In 1836 Edward & John each were granted a ticket of leave.
On this document it is noted that Edward's trade was a coachman.
Conditional pardons came in 1843 for Edward
and 1845 for John

A conditional pardon is all they could obtain, because they had been sentenced to life
This meant they were free but had to remain in the colony

An absolute pardon or a Certificate of Freedom was only available
for those convicts with a finite sentence ie 7, 10 or 14 years

However there is a John SADLER marrying in England in 1858
The marriage is witnessed by James SADLER and Mary SADLER
Did he return?
Details of this marriage and subsequent children can be found here
