How To Download Layouts

I know from experience that yeah, layouts, are a pain in the butt. Most graphic shops make layouts for those people who can't make them for themselves. And those people who don't have the tools to make them, have no experience with them! So, I decided to make this little tutorial ^_^ Oh uh, this tutorial is from my experience with what systems I have, which is a Windows 98 and ME. Basically this is written for Windows, not Macs. I'm sorry! I don't have one +_+

Anyway, before you begin, you NEED a zip program such as WinZIP. If you don't have it, download it now. It will be alot easier to explain the tutorial that way. Okay, I'm real bad at explaining things but just listen close and pay attention.

What is .zip?

-First off, you need to know what a Zip file is and the basics of layoutography. All it is is a file compressor. You have many files that you need to download, and the zip file "zips" them all together into one neat little package. Ex: your layout includes the following items: "layoutname1x1.gif", "layoutname2x1.gif", "layoutname3x1.gif", "layoutname.html", "layoutname.css". (Cont. ->)

-The .gif files are just regular images. These can also come in .jpg or any other ending image name. The .html file is the html code for the layout. You don't see it as the actual html words and instructions until you upload it to your server's editor (such as Angelfire, Geocities). So don't panic ^^ Most of the time you DO NOT alter these except for the content, different colors, and so on so forth. If you alter the tables or frames instructions for example and don't know what you're doing, welcome to M-squared: Migraine Motel! ^^ Finally, some layouts have CSS (Cascading Style Sheet) to help organize the layout and make it look all pretty ^^ Upload that to your server as well and only alter it if you want different colors or whatever. Mine are really simple for now, so you shouldn't have alot of trouble.

-Kay then, back to where we were. A zip file just squishes all these together so you just download them once ^^ *Phew!* Took me all those words just to get the little sentence out!?

Step-by-Step Intructions

Are you with me? Now for the step by step downloading instuctions:

1. After downloading WinZip, find a layout you want to download. Work with me here and lets use one of my layouts. Click here. It will open to a new window for easier handeling. Now, click download on "Winged Dream", my first blog layout for you guys.

2. A pop up screen will come up saying "File Download." Select "Save File to Disk" and click "OK."

3. Select a folder to save it in. It can be a folder you created for your personal stuff if you share the computer with your family, or whichever one you designate it to be. If you are not sure where to put it, just save it in your "My Documents" folder. Hit "Save".

4. The zip file will now be downloading to your "My Documents" folder, or whichever one you chose. See, I have my own personal folder where I store all MY files on our family computer called "Ana's Folder" and likewise all my sisters have their own too. But for the sake of non-confusion, I'm sticking it in "My Documents" folder. Kay then, now hit "Open".

5. So now with your spiffy new *ZIP* program ^_~ you will open and "extract" the folders. When you hit "Open", a WinZip screen will appear. Hit "I Agree" or whatever. My version is a little *cough!* old but still does the work =) so I don't know how they have the newer versions now. A WinZip "archive" will appear with all the contents in the layout you just downloaded! Yay! (That was cheezy -_-) Right click and highlight all the contents. Then hit "Extract".

6. Again, you will have to choose which location you want the layout to be extracted to. I'm picking "My Documents."

7. Okay, this is it! *drumroll!* Now, take all of those files EXCEPT! for the .zip file and upload it ALL to your server.Fot those of you who are not familiar with the terminology, here's what you do: Get on the Internet and log into your web host account. Go to their FTP page (or however that service provides an upload service). In the upload text boxes, "Browse" one by one for each item in the layout you just downloaded, looking for the folder you stored them in. Hit upload and there you have it! Once it's all there, you can copy, cut, paste, edit, attach, update, change, revamp, and/or just stare at a blank screen all you want ^__^ Now that you know how to do it, you can have a great layout for your site in no time! Good luck and have some fun! ^_^
