4/10/08 FLOWING WELLS 6 DESERT VIEW 3
It's Senior Day, and Julie shares an emotional moment with Ana after presenting her with flowers.
Next year's team breaks out in applause for...
...our wonderful seniors, Diana, Ana, Betzi, Daisy, Sarah, Lizbeth and Cassandra!
I am so proud of how this team has improved as the season progressed – both Sahuaro and Flowing Wells beat us 8-1 the first time around. We defeated Sahuaro last week, and had a shot at doing the same to Flowing Wells today, but fell short. Best of all, our girls all got the opportunity to see the Leikem twins in action together in doubles for the first time this season. Daisy and Stephanie played well, but the three-time state doubles champs are something else!
Oh... and THANKS, girls for the ice-water shower! Watch your backs...

Junior Jags complete winning season by sweeping Caballeros!!!
Here we are in the toughest conference we’ve ever played in, but the Junior Jags just kept getting stronger with each match. Today, they completely dominated Flowing Wells, which probably has the conference champs pretty nervous about next year. Congratulations, Junior Jags!

Li’l Jags do it again – win 3-2!
These girls are our future and they have shown their promise day after day. I’m sorry all of them couldn’t play today, but their enthusiasm all season long will be rewarded next season when they play every match. Heck, they had the best record by far of all the Lady Jaguar squads! Li’l Jags rock!!!

Revenge is sweet!
Flowing Wells’ Janette Alcaraz thumped Karina 8-2 when we played back in March, so she was eager for a rematch, and Janette was kind enough to give her one. Here’s an example of how much the girls have improved since then:

4/8/08 SABINO 9 DESERT VIEW 0
We simply didn’t play well today. The girls showed a lot of improvement in the aspects of their game that we’ve been working on, but not on winning crucial points. Don’t let the scores fool you – practically every game played today went to deuce, but the Jags couldn’t step up when given the opportunity. We hope to turn that around when we meet Flowing Wells at home for our final match, which is also “Senior Day.” Be there or be square!

Captain Kyla Kemp had a great day! Playing some of the best tennis of her young career (she’s only a sophomore), she won at #1 singles and nearly pulled out #3 doubles with freshman Gaby Serrano. Youth ruled today!

Li’l Jags down Sabercats, 4-3!!!
Wow – these girls are unstoppable! Today, the Li’l Jags beat the deepest program in the conference. Viviana and Cynthia won in dominating fashion, but the real thrill today was Yoandra and Vielka clinching the win in stressful tiebreakers. Whatever the stress, neither Jag felt it as they easily won the tiebreaks. Way to go, Li’l Jags! And thanks to the Li’l Sabercats who played additional matches so all of our girls could play.

4/1/08 DESERT VIEW 5 SAHUARO 4
No, it’s not an April Fool’s Day joke, folks. So what if the last time we played Sahuaro, the Cougars thumped us, 8-1? This young team never gives up and works as hard in practice as any I’ve coached. Today, down 4-2 after singles, I told my doubles teams that they needed to play the way they’re capable of, and they did just that, sweeping Sahuaro for our first Kino win. You should have seen the team mob Ana and Cassandra after they clinched the victory! The win puts us in a tie for 4th place, and a shot at competing in post-season team play in what I think is this year’s toughest conference in girls tennis.

Junior, Li’l Jags Crush Cougars, 9-1
Our JV and Li’l Jags are proving themselves to be a formidable force! Last time, we won 6-3, but this time the Jags played with true heart, winning every close match! Our girls are improving at such a rate that I suspect we’re going to have a powerhouse team when they step up next year. And many thanks to the Cougars who played second matches so that all of our girls could play.

Baby Jags tie Sahuaro JV, 2-2!
Lisbet was depressed after losing, but I told her there is nothing wrong for a first-year player falling to a JV player. I don’t think it made her feel any better, though. Congrats to the Tiny Toons, Jenny and Arely, who played their first tiebreaker, and won! Way to go, Toons!

Congratulations to Coach Parks and the Blue Devils for their first win over us in more than ten years. He returned with a veteran team that gave us some headaches last year, and this time they prevailed. Nobody dinks the ball as effectively as our sister school, and it took its toll as matches wore on. Kudos to Carla Rodriguez who fought off the urge to play safe and won yet another marathon match, and then returned with partner Sarah Lewis to win their doubles match.

Junior/Li’l/Baby Jags continue to roll, 8-4!
It’s starting to look as if we may have the best squad of up-and-comers in the conference. The girls get better with every match, and it’s all because of their great attitude. Karina said after her match, “At the start, I was afraid I was going on another losing streak, but I told myself I wasn’t going to let that happen.” Li’l Jags Viviana and Regina stepped up and had a huge win at JV #1 doubles and freshman Baby Jag Vania played her first singles match ever and totally rocked! Many thanks to those Blue Devils who played more than one match so all of our girls had a chance to play (we had 24 players to their 13).

3/27/08 NOGALES 9 DESERT VIEW 0
With Daisy and Stephanie out of town, the girls had to step up. Nogales 1 & 2 players graciously stepped aside in singles to allow the girls who had played each other before play again, to measure their improvement. And WOW, how we’ve improved – nearly every player had much better results this time (scroll down to our March 6th match to compare). Ana Romero handily won the first set at #1, but suffered a letdown after that, and was unable to close out. Sarah and Carla stepped up to #2 doubles and played their second excellent match in a row.
Singles:
1. Fernanda Miller d. Ana Romero 2-6, 6-0, 7-3
2. Lauren Parra d. Cassandra Rodriguez 6-1, 6-0
3. Maiya Block d. Sarah Lewis 7-5, 6-2
4. Zarina Ploss d. Carla Rodriguez 7-5, 6-4

2. Miller/Parra d. Lewis/Car. Rodriguez 8-5
3. Block/Ploss d. Viviana Garcia/Regina Calles 8-0
Junior/Baby/Li’l Jags tumble to Apaches, 10-1
The score doesn’t tell the story – there were so many close matches that with a little luck, we might have won. Julie, playing with a foot injury, gutted it out to win in tiebreak at #1. And Esme, Diana, Gaby, and Leslie lost heartbreakers. The longest match of the day was Jennifer Daniels, who fell 8-4 in just over two hours! The girls gained a lot of confidence today, dramatically improving their results from last time.

Carla Rodriguez played her heart out today against the league-leading Caballeros. After losing a 2-hour marathon match, she was dizzy and dehydrated. However, she returned to the court for revenge with partner Sarah Kills-a-Buffalo Lewis, and they teamed up for a thrilling win. Daisy and Stephanie played very well against the three-time state doubles champs, the Leikem twins, who have signed to play for the University of Rhode Island next year… after they win a fourth state title.

Junior/Li’l/Baby Jags unseat Caballeros, 6-3
The Junior, Li’l and Baby Jags continue to build confidence as they all played JV today against a strong Flowing Wells squad. Kyla Kemp pulled away from her opponent at # 1 singles to set the tone, Julie and Esme cruised yet again, and freshman Gaby Serrano made an impressive JV debut at #6 singles. Kudos also go to Baby Jags Cynthia Ramirez and Vania Meraz for a one-sided win in their first JV match!

Thank goodness for Spring Break! We’ll be practicing every day and I hope the varsity can regain its confidence in that time. Our JV and Li’l Jags are doing great, playing without fear. That’s what I need to see from the varsity. Sarah lost a hard-fought match at #5 in her first tiebreaker, but she learned a lot about playing every point.

Sabercats down Junior, Li’l Jags, 7-2
Sabino is a quality team with depth, so the less-experienced Junior Jags found themselves playing some very strong competition. Our girls came out on the short end today, but they learned a lot of lessons about what they need to accomplish to get to the next level.
Singles:
1. Nicole Koectyker SAB d. Kyla Kemp 8-4
2. Briana Fugere SAB d. Betzin Castillo 8-3
3. Julie Bermudez DV d. Julia Chalk 8-5

Li’l and Baby Jags win, 3-2
Sabino started the season with the largest team in the city – over 40 girls, but their numbers have dwindled since then, so we weren’t able to play all our girls. We tried to give everyone a chance, and the Li’l and Baby Jags came though with impressive performances. Gabriela deserves special kudos on her second straight win against the best teams in Tucson! Way to go, Gaby!

(NOTE: the AIA has changed this result to a Lady Jaguar win by forfeit.)
Ana Romero thrilled a large crowd today with an amazing comeback after losing the first set to win a marathon 3rd set tiebreaker. Ana was inspired by seeing Daisy and Stephanie return to form, playing with confidence against a very good CDO team which recently gave Foothills a run for its money. I see this young team beginning to step up to the next level. Way to go, Lady Jags!

Dorados down Junior, Li’l Jags, 7-2
We got to play everyone today! We had four girls out sick, so everyone who was here got to play at least one singles or doubles match. Karina continues to improve with every match, and freshman Li’l Jag Gaby won her first ever JV match in a contest that looked to be headed to tiebreaker. She showed a lot of courage by stepping up and winning the crucial game by playing to win.

The surprise of the day was the Tiny Tunes, Jenny and Arely, falling in doubles. They both admitted afterward that they need to work on strategy and footwork. Volleyballers Viviana and Regina are beginning to move their feet and they played excellent matches today.

The top of the ladder continues to play below expectations, and this is beginning to affect the rest of the team which is looking there for leadership. With two undefeated powerhouse programs – CDO and Sabino – coming to our courts the next two days, it’s the perfect time for a turnaround -- we have nothing to lose. Stephanie, Cassandra, and Sarah were competitive, but fell short. We got a gutsy performance from Carla Rodriguez who got mad when she dropped the second set and roared through the tiebreaker with a convincing 10-2 shellacking. Good job, Carla!

Junior, Li’l Jags down Warriors, 7-2!
I couldn’t be prouder of the Junior and Li’l Jags, who continue to improve and play without fear. The starting JV took singles and #1 doubles 6-1, so Li’l Jags got the opportunity to play doubles and played very well. Our junior/sophomore tandem of Viviana and Regina lost a tough match, but played extremely well, drawing compliments from the opposing coach, and our sophomore/freshman team of Cynthia and Leslie won at #3.
Singles:

Li’l and Baby Jags win, 4-2!
Two freshmen played their very first singles matches as Lady Jaguars, and they were magnificent! Rosa Ayon blanked her opponent, 6-0, and Yoandra De La Torre was edged out when nerves took over in a heartbreaking tiebreak loss. Leslie Castillo continues to be our most outstanding singles newcomer, with yet another dominating win. The Tiny Toons came from behind again to win their doubles, just before the match was called because of darkness.

Our varsity still struggles with confidence, but I see improvement. The girls need to learn that they are playing three-set matches and that losing the first set is an opportunity, not the end of the world. When they learn to step up, they’ll be on the path to victory.
Daisy and Stephanie did step up in their doubles match and are starting to return to last year’s form that took them to state. And kudos to Sarah for her hard-fought two-set victory, and Carla, who did step up in the second set and came so close. Way to go Ladies!
Singles:

Junior, Li’l Jags Down Cougars, 6-3
Our JV and new players are improving so rapidly! We saw strong performances on all courts today. JV played singles and won handily, losing only one close match, so I put the Li’l Jags in to play doubles (Sahuaro was short-handed today). Congrats to Viviana and Regina, who won in a thrilling tiebreaker at #2 doubles, and to Cynthia and Vania, who fought hard at #3, barely being edged out at the end.

Li’l, Baby Jags Sweep!
After their terrific efforts in Nogales yesterday, I wanted to see if Leslie and the Tiny Toons really had what it takes to be winners. They proved that yesterday was no fluke, winning in dominating fashion, as did fellow freshman, Gabriela Serrano at #1 singles. Well, it happened yet again. Our bus to the border was 45 minutes late for this very important match, so the girls ended up with 15 minutes of warm up time. Conditions were cold, with blustery winds, but the girls certainly would have played better has they had time to warm up; instead, we saw weak play.

L’il Jags are swept!
By the time the Li’l and Baby Jags came on the courts, it was bitterly cold and windy. Even so, I was proud of their effort, especially Leslie, who showed real passion, and the “Tiny Toons,” Jennifer and Arely, also played a wonderful match! But the best thing was that everyone got to play.

Our first win has been an unexpectedly long time coming, but…Whew! Today we got the strong performances we’ve expected from the bottom of our roster. Number three Ana Romero really stepped up when she was down 5-1 in the first set to win a gritty tiebreaker. Daisy Quezada has been struggling at #1, but when she gains confidence, we expect great things from her. I hope it happens in time for our first conference match Thursday, when we face the always-tough Apaches

Junior Jags Sweep Chargers, 3-0!
Betzi has long been one of the hardest working girls on the team, and her first singles victory has been long overdue. Today, she went on the court with a new-found confidence to match her ever-present determination. She didn’t merely walk off the court with a win – she shut out her opponent! I believe this is the first of many wins for one of the most popular players on the team. Way to go, Betzi!

It’s tough playing without your #3 player when you’re counting on the bottom of the order to win the match. Ana Romero had a family emergency, so we had to move everyone up, and they weren’t quite prepared for a strong Sahuarita team.
Daisy awaits the serve in her marathon match.
Daisy stepped up, though, and played the best match of her career, losing after three hours of top-notch tennis. I see this team on the verge of breaking through.

Mustangs edge Junior Jags, 4-3
This is what’s called a “good loss”. Even though #1 Kyla Kemp was called on to step up to varsity, the remaining Junior Jags played extremely well against more experienced competition. Nearly all of the matches were close, and our girls learned a lot about what they need to do to get to the next level.

This was a disappointing match that we could have won. After a strong start, Ana Romero let her singles match slip away from her, and we lost two doubles matches after having match point in each. I told the girls after the match that they were the better players today, but they need to get mentally tough – “match-tough.” We’re going to work on that this weekend after we host a strong Sahuarita team tomorrow. But kudos go to Sarah and Carla for excellent singles play!

Li’l Jags Sweep Trojans, 6-0!!!
What a day for the Li’l Jags! Although darkness precluded doubles, they lit up the courts with their superb singles play. Many of them have only been playing for a couple of weeks, but they showed competitive fire. And they’re simply going to keep getting better, match after match! Special congrats to Regina for the first bagel of her career – in just her second match!

Baby Jags notch first win, 4-3
Let’s hear it for the Baby Jags, who bounced back from their spanking by the Falcons on Tuesday, to edge out the Baby Trojans! These girls are brand-new to tennis – in fact, most of them just learned how to score – but they walk on the court like mini-pros. Thank to Jasmin and Cynthia who went out to play second matches to cement the win. Her opponent’s mother complimented Cynthia for her outstanding character during her match. That’s what this sport is all about.

Now this is a lot of tenistas! 33 Lady Jags roar out their cheer as 25 Falcons walk off the court.
We played 34 matches today as two of the largest teams in the city faced off. Foothills lost 5 starters last year, and we lost ten seniors, so I guess it could be called a rebuilding year for both young teams. I think we have a lot more building to do than the Falcons – after all, they’ve won state for the past eight years! But it was an enjoyable match, featuring a LOT of enthusiastic young players. I was most impressed by how our girls shook off the jitters after their singles matches, and playing some tough tennis in doubles. And now they all know what they want to improve.
The Tucson Citizen sent ace reporter Kim Hartman (a former collegiate tennis player) to cover the match, so look for a story in tomorrow’s paper!
