Tanya Cota

College-bound Desert View senior, tennis player and boys basketball manager

Name: Tanya Cota.

School: Desert View High School.

Year: Senior.

Age: 17.

Inside the classroom: Tanya is taking Pima Community College writing courses this year and a full schedule at Desert View.

Outside the classroom: She started playing tennis her freshman year at Desert View and has been on the varsity since her sophomore year. She also manages the boys basketball team. Tanya is an officer and very involved in the school's Academic Planning for Excellence, a club for college-bound seniors.

The lowdown: Tanya has set her sights on attending an out-of-state university and is doing everything she needs to realize that goal, said Desert View counselor N.J. Utter. That has included retaking the SAT and substantially raising her scores after a great deal of preparation and study.

Person she would most like to met: Bill Gates, Microsoft chairman and founder.

Favorite movie: "Save the Last Dance."

Favorite food: Pasta.

Favorite class: Economics. "I'm planning to go into business," she said. "This gives you an idea of the real world."

Favorite school memory: Graduating from kindergarten at Liberty Elementary School. "It was exciting. It was the first big accomplishment," she said. "I remember wearing a cap and gown - little paper ones."

School sound bite: "She has really applied herself to becoming an excellent tennis player as well as an outstanding student," Utter said.

Favorite person at school: Counselor Utter, because she is helping Tanya prepare for college.

Aspirations after high school: She is still researching universities. She hopes to receive tennis and academic scholarships and major in business.
