INTRODUCING THE WHITLAMS

1.THE BALLAD OF LESTER WALKER

Lester Walker wasn't a great talker
He went to parties but always stood along
People amused him, he was always looking on
But now our Lester Walker's gone

Bus rides, highways, looking for a new place
Found a new space and called it home
Seen on beaches making castles in the sand
Being alone was all he'd ever known

Well he's gone
Our Lester's gone from our home
That's what his mother cries
He doesn't even phone to tell her how he is

His room's the same s when he was just a little boy
I know that he'll return some day, yeah she knows he will
Three months later in the park he meets a boy named Sid
They talk of all the things they'd do and all the things they did

Everyday they'd sit and meet and talk and watch and laugh
So close a bond yet so innocent, a love was formed
The two of them climb up a hill and in a warm embrace
They watch the sun slowly set behind a mountain range
All they needed was there and then nothing needed to be said
'Cause nothing can disturb the unconcerned

But then
In the morning paper Lester reads that Sid is dead
Got stabbed in the park late last night
Lester cries out in pain, runs to the window and releases himself
Now side by side they lie in the mortuary

Well he's gone
Our Lester's gone from our home
That's what his mother cried
The phone smashed on the floor she knows where her son lies

His room's the same as when he was just a little boy
Never to return to his mother's loving arms

Oh yes he's gong
Our Lester's gone from our home
She cries and cries
No he don't phone no more, she knows where he now lies

His room's the same aw when he was just a little boy
Never to return to his mother's loving arms

2.WHERE IS SHE

Where is she? I've been driving 'round this town
Poking my head in the corners we used to sit
Stop for a bottle, there'll be trouble wherever I go
Some neat and sensible girl screaming for order

Who would've known I'd be lonely
Here on my own she's so lovely
Lovely, lovely

Loved her room, sleep all day with no doorknocks for me
Let the phone ring and suburbs away my one ringing along with it
Stop for a bottle, there'll be trouble wherever I go
Some neat and sensible girl screaming for order

Who would've known I'd be lonely
Here on my own she's so lovely
Lovely, lovely

Not together or 'sleep by her side
Get me someone to get her out of my mind
Not together or 'sleep by her side
Get me someone to get her out of my mind

3.HAPPY DAYS

Monday - my day of rest
Tuesday - I do my best
Wednesday - I wander round the town

Thursday - I get depressed
Friday - my hair's a mess
But then the weekend comes around

Yeah, I'll borrow ten bucks and go out drinking
There's a party going on and I've been thinking
We'll grab a case of beer and go down there and see what it's all about
Gonna get myself wiped out

Then Julie phoned and this is what she said

She said ain't had a holiday in the past five years
Working my fingers to the bone
Forget that grease and grime, for now it's party time
Come and leave that nine to five alone

Yeah, I'll borrow a car, we'll go out speedin'
There's a party going on and I've been needin'
Have a drink and talk with you to see what you're all about
Come and get yourself wiped out

Five days a week in the workforce is just enough to drive anyone mad
But stick with me Julie baby
It's more fun being poor than sad

(Gotta get in, gotta get out and lose some skin)

Yeah, borrow ten buck...
Party going on...
Drink some beer...
And see what it's all about

Gonna get myself
Gonna get myself
Gonna get myself wiped out

4.GOUGH

Little song about a man called Gough
and a little boy who wanted to be tarred with the same brush
He learnt Latin, held his head up high and he hated the
Liberals tho' he didn't know why
There were reasons - how long have you got?
There are always reasons - how long have you got?
The little boy he's on the stage tonight, his name is Anthony Hayes and he's doing alright
They both went to the same local Canberra school, but Stevie was nine in 1972
What a party - a big day for both of us
A big reason to party - a big day for both of us
Come over have dinner with me, we'll play chess and drink claret
Walk slowly down my little street, you can bring Margaret
November 11 was Armistice Day
A bushranger was slaughtered and Gough was betrayed
November 11 - he wouldn't survive the Governor General in '75
November 11 - a big day for all of us
I said November 11 - Ned Kelly died
Shame Fraser shame and we all cried
For you Gough you Gough you Gough
Edward Gough Whitlam
You Gough you Gough you Gough
Edward Gough Whitlam
Days of wine and roses, days of wine and roses
All the artists flew in and all the arseholes flew out in '72
For you Gough you Gough you Gough
Edward Gough Whitlam

5.MUM'S GOING OUT

Mum's going out gotta put some more petrol on
Gimmie a yippee, oi oi oi
When she started screaming nearly pissed my pants with joy
'Cause she loves me and wants me to be a happy boy

6.PIGEONS IN THE ATTIC

Well I hate to have to tell you this
But there were pigeons in the attic room
When you left me standing gasping that afternoon
And where the floorboards left their splinters
As you left me so soon

And me, I'm drunk again
And when I'm drunk I make no sense
But I crack more jokes and that's my self defense
You caused me to think
And I thought about what I had done without you
You drove me to drink
And I never had the courtesy to thank you

7.WOODY

Woody, Woody
You didn't do it did you?
We love your movies

Mia, Mamma Mia
He didn't do it did he?
We loved his movies

8.JUMPIN' LEPRECHAUNS

Back in the park, nearly dark
What do I now hear, hark hark
Is it really leprechauns have come back to rock and roll?
Oh yes it's them out on the lawn
Been so long since they've been gone
Mother nature's leprechauns have come back to rock and roll

Um ba da da da da dia da
Um ba da da da da dia
Um ba da da da da dia da
They've come back to rock and roll

Um ba da da da da dia da
Um ba da da da da dia
Um ba da da da da dia da
They've come back to rock and roll

We'll see them rockin' and a rollin'
They're wobblin' and a wiggling
They're stompin' and a giggling
They hear rock 'n' roll

Well yes it's them out on the lawn
Been so long since they've been gone
Mother nature's leprechauns have come back to rock and roll
With a how you doing? Where you been?
Oh it's so good to have you back my friends
I know right now it was never meant to end
They've come back to rock 'n' roll

Um ba da da da da dia da
Um ba da da da da dia
Um ba da da da da dia da
They've come back to rock and roll

Um ba da da da da dia da
Um ba da da da da dia
Um ba da da da da dia da
They've come back to rock and roll

We'll see them rockin' and a rollin'
They're wobblin' and a wiggling
They're stompin' and a giggling
And they're hear rock 'n' roll

Well, yes it's them out on the lawn
Been so long since they've been gone
Mother nature's leprechauns have come back to rock and roll
With a how you doing? How you been?
Oh it's so good to have you back again
I know right now it was never meant to end
They've come back to rock 'n' roll

9.I'M DIFFERENT

I'm different I don't care who knows it
Something about me's just not the same
I'm different that's how it goes
I'm not going to play your god damn games

Got a different way of talking
Got a different kid of smile
I got a different way of walking
Drives the women kind of wild

(He's different) I don't care who knows it
(There's something about him) that's not the same
(He's different) that's how it goes
I'm not going to play your god damn games

Not saying that I'm better than you are
Or maybe I am
All I know is when I look in the mirror
I like the man (we like the man!)

I'm different that's how it goes
Something about me's just not the same
I'm different that's how it goes
I'm not going to play your god damn games

I walk down the street in the morning and
blue birds are singing in the old oak tree
Yeah I sing a little song for the people
Little song from me (tralala lalala lalala laaaa) (He's different) I don't care who knows it
(There's something about him) that's not the same
(He's different) that's how it goes
I'm not going to play your god damn games

(He's different) I don't care who knows it
(There's something about him) that's not the same
(He's different) that's how it goes
I'm not going to play your god damn games

10.WINTER LOVIN'

Walking in winter, not so many people out
Seems like I gotta find me a girl so we can't go out
Drop of whiskey, drop of ginger wine
Call it a whiskey mack and you can be mine

Winter lovin' - that's the best kind of lovin'
Winter lovin' - that's the best kind of lovin' for me

Come spring I take my T-Shirt back off again
Walk around thinking I can feel the wind in my hair
Look at all the other people walking away from winter
I just hope they all got some winter lovin' like me

Winter lovin' - that's the best kind of lovin'
Winter lovin' - that's the best kind of lovin' for me

Come Autumn I'm thinking 'bout winter again
Winter coming up to me, but I got no friend
Drinking whiskey macks and talking about it, that's not going to get me no big fat woman to keep me warm

I gotta go out and meet 'em, not sit around the house singing shit like this

Winter lovin' - that's the best kind of lovin'
Winter lovin' - that's the best kind of lovin' for me

It's all about me, me and winter and someone else
