Cold: Live At The Chapel Review - by Cassie Grieve
I was given the chance of a lifetime by Phoebe to go to Melbourne and watch the recording of Jebediah at ‘Cold: Live At The Chapel’, and meet Jebediah. What is so extraordinary about this is that I only met Phoebe three days before we set off to Melbourne.
Anyway onto the gig!
They were amazing as always, and I’m not being one-eyed or just a typical fan, if you have not had the chance to see Jebediah live do it NOW! 'Harpoon' and 'If you Want It', the first two songs, were acoustic and after a quick joke from Kevin about Jebediah being an acoustic band from now on, they got straight into it!
You could tell from the body language from the band that they were dying to get up and get the rock and roll moves on, in particular Ness who was swinging her legs in time to the Music, while being seated on a stool in true acoustic style! They then went through ‘Eveready’, ‘Nothing Lasts Forever’ (which is the new single out 18 Feb) and an ‘oldie but goodie’ thrown in, ‘Leaving Home’!
Now is when it really felt like a TV show, rather than a gig, because it was Question and Answer time. Questions ranged from "What were your New Years resolutions', to "Why aren’t you playing Big Day Out' to "Where are those tracksuits that you wore for the BDO in 2000 and are they coming back?' The answers proved that the Jebs have a good sense of humour and had nothing to worry about when answering questions about themselves!
It was straight back into it with ‘NDC’, ‘Please Leave’, ‘Baltic Ballet’, ‘No. 1’, and ‘Fall Down’. Speaking of ‘Fall Down’, new fifth member Jake (Bagpipes) nearly caused riot during his brief appearances, with claims of him being more popular than the band and even prompting an audience member to rename the band JAKEdiah.
The band then left the stage but were then quickly informed that there was a camera glitch and they would have to re-perform ‘Fall Down’, and Chris got into his own little dance after heckling from the crowd for the dancing seen in the Fall Down video clip! But it wasn’t meant to be; the band fell down literally in fits of laughter after a stuff-up by one band member. The band then agreed to play ‘Military Strongmen’, although they were a little rusty, and ‘Hey Presto!’, as a request from the one and only me!
After the show, I was lucky enough to meet the Band and some of the other Jebs team! In all, a great and entertaining night! It had a great mix of songs – new, old and in-between. It's something I will never forget! I just hope I never have to do it again! Sitting down and listening to Jebediah definitely isn’t easy; my foot didn’t stop tapping all night!
