Unexpected Friendships:
Chapter One

"I can't believe you're moving!" My best friend in the whole wide world, Mallory Sandburg, cried. "I thought you were kidding when you told me last week."

"No... I'm not kidding." I replied. "I need a change in scenery and so do the boys. Plus, Bob has to shut down the resturant for repairs next week, I'll be out of a job." I told her.

"I'll lend you money. Just don't leave." she practically begged. It was funny watching her beg me to stay in boring old Sanford. I was only going to Tampa, just two hours away. My dad is a Real Estate Agent, and he got me a real nice beach house for the time being. Perfect size for me and my boys.

"I gotta go." I told her again. "My dad already paid for the house for at least a year..." It was a little sad, I know. Leaving town for no reason. But I knew I just had to go. "It's only two hours away, maybe less if you speed. You can come down every weekend, and we'll come up, too." I told her.

"It won't be the same, Tor. I love you living next to you all our lives, I don't want you to move away. I don't want to have to drive two hours just to see you." she complained.

"Mallory, I'm sorry. I just need to experience something different, other than Sanford." I told her.

"No... I know why you're leaving. You're going to Tampa to find the boys' dad. I can't believe you, Tor. You promised you'd never contact him. You don't need him. Don't you remember what he did to you?" she practically screamed.

"I'm not going to find him. Trust me, I don't wanna see him again." I informed her. She smiled.

"Good. Well, I guess this is goodbye." she finished. She leaned into the backseat of my small, rusty old car and kissed both of my sons' heads. "I love you guys, don't forget about Aunty Mallory." she told them.

"They could never forget you." I told my best friend. "And neither could I."

Then I sat in the front seat of my car, after hugging Mallory for the hundereth time. All our stuff was stuffed into the trunk. I had already said goodbye to my parents and my two younger brothers, just an hour before.

"I love you, Torrance." Mallory smiled again, letting the tears fall down her cheeks. "You're the best friend a girl could ever have."

"Thanks, Mal. I love you too. I'll call you as soon as we get there." I told her.

"You better." she finished.

I smiled and waved as I backed out of the driveway. I was finally free. Just me and my boys on the open road. Until we reached Tampa, that is.
