Historical Data

Gene Dawson and Chris Lyerly form the core of The Dawson/Lyerly Band. They have worked together on and off for over twenty years, ever since Gene invited Chris to play bass for the (then) newly reconstituted Meretrix in January of 1977. But their roots go back much further than that, to the day when Gene had the good luck and good sense to marry Chris's cousin Susan. Things began to develop shortly after that: "I was still in high school", Chris recalls, "when Gene and Susan came over to my house - with a banjo, of all things! He taught me the guitar chords to 'Orange Blossom Special', and showed me a few other things too. When I got back from college, I told him had been playing bass for several years, so he offered me the bass spot in his band. And that's the way it's been, on and off, ever since."

Here's the more recent chronology of The Dawson/Lyerly Band:

January 1997

Gene calls Chris, his bass player from days of yore, and asks him if he wants to form a blues band. Thus Big E and the Blues Cats is born as a loud, electric, 4-piece Chicago-style blues band.
September 1998

Chris returns from a Bass Master Class with Jack Casady at Fur Peace Ranch , where he had the opportunity not only to attend formal classes with Jack, but to spend time jamming with and learning from other members of Hot Tuna as well. For a write-up of this event, as well as a "class photo", see Chris's page. Upon his return, Big E and the Blues Cats is "resurrected" as an acoustic/electric duo:   The Blues Cats.
October 1998

The Blues Cats debut at the Layhill Cafe.
June 1999

The Blues Cats on video! Three songs are taped for our appearance on Montgomery's Most Talented (see item above under performances).
January 2000
The Blues Cats on TV! The first song taped back in June finally appears on MCTV.
May 2000

With an expanded focus and a new name, The Dawson/Lyerly Band debuts at the DC Blues Society's monthly jam session at Taliano's in Takoma Park, MD (see item below).
