Live
Recording
In November 1998, Lotus played
a gig in the Bloody Stream in Howth, Co. Dublin. Luckily
this gig was captured on tape in its entirety. While the
quality of the recording is not perfect (the drums are too
low in the mix), it is still exciting to listen to and
musically it was an excellent gig. It demonstrates just
how tight Lotus were as a live band, and although this
was not their best gig, it gives an good indication of how
Lotus sounded live back in 1998.

The tape features a
solo performance of the song "To See You Fall", which was
never played by the band. This is a great ballad but
unfortunately the sound is in mono for the first half of the
track. It eventually comes back to stereo.
The other originals featured
are "I Could Never Love You", a great rock number
which would have sat happily on the "Lotus" LP; and the
unrecorded "Break", from the "Secret" LP. This song is a huge
rocking moment, full of energy and heavy guitar. It
certainly shook the ceiling!
Also played are 3
cover songs - a rockin' and rollin' version of the Beatles
"Get Back", a superb rock version of Chris Isaak's "Wicked
Game", and the crowd pleasing Stone Roses classic "She Bangs
The Drums" as the encore.
All in all this gig shows a
band full of energy and confidence, with songs to match.
Paul Byrne says: "It was a very exciting gig - like
witnessing an early punk group. The crowd were very
receptive, which was unusual considering they played only 3
covers."
This gig was actually the second last Lotus
gig in the '98 line up: the next two were in the Mean
Fiddler and the Tivoli Theatre.
