Biography
Originating from Newcastle Australia, NSW the band we all know as silverchair (Daniel Johns [Guitar/Vocals], Chris Joannou [Bass], and Ben Gillies [Drums]) didn't begin as silverchair. They began with the name of Innocent Criminals with other member, Tobin Finnane. At the time they were in their teens and they entered the "nomad pick me" demo competition with a version of "Tomorrow" that was as long as 5 minutes. On June 16, 1994, they were announced the winners. After that "Tomorrow" was released in Australia and went huge. It was recorded no. 1 on the Aria charts for six weeks and On November 25, 1994 it was certified platinum in Australia.
Their next single, Pure Massacre was released January 15, 1995 and quickly rises the aria charts at no. 2 for 2 weeks. Later on certified gold in February. On March 27, 1995 the Australian release of frogstomp occurred and shortly after "Tomorrow" was played for the first time in the US on 99X Atlanta, The end in Seattle, and Chicago's Q101. Frogstomp was recorded platinum in Australia on April 10, 1995. On April 12 they released their third single, "Israel's Son" which reached no.11 on the Aria charts. May 26, 1995 they released their forth single "Shade". Frogstomp was later released in Canada and the US and was certified triple platinum in Australia in December.
In January 1997 Australia released silverchair's single "Freak" for their following album from Frogstomp, which debuted no. 1 on Aria charts 7 days later. Freakshow, their second cd was released February 3, 1997. Other singles from that album was "Abuse Me" and "Cemetery".
In 1998-1999 the Chair went back to the recording studio to record their third album, Neon Ballroom. With such singles as "Anthem for the year 2000", "Ana's Song" and "Miss you Love". Neon Ballroom was released March 8, 1999 in Australia, and went Platinum in the first month of releasing!
In the year 2000, not much happened with silverchair. Silverchair quit their contract with Sony records and got their own called Eleven. Sony put out a "Best of Silverchair Volume 1" Disc with their hits and B-sides. Daniel Johns and Paul Mac also recorded "accidentally" they said and made a five track EP tilted "I Can't Believe it's Not Rock!" which is limited, so get a copy quick. They also played one show, at the Falls Festival in Australia on New Year's Eve December 31, 2000 and played two new songs. "One Way Mule" and "Hollywood" Daniel was dressed in a glittery gold suit, and looks like he is growing out his hair like the old days.
In the year 2001, this is a new beginning. They are playing Rock in Rio, January 21, 2001 and hopefully after that we will be showered with new stuff from silverchair.
