In May and June of 1981, The End recorded the three original and four cover songs shown above
as a demo tape for local clubs.   Many of copies of the band's CLUB DEMO tape, some with just
the four covers but most with all seven songs, were distributed in the summer of 1981.   Later
that summer The End recorded four more original songs and released all the original material on tape
under the title BEGINNINGS.   "Summer 1981" versions of BEGINNINGS (visually identifiable by their
black-and-white covers) sometimes also included one or both of the songs marked with an asterisk (*).
"Beat It, Mom" was an original punk song recorded by The End in 1980 while the band still called
themselves White Noise (see band history), and "Spanish Jam" was a
keyboard-only instrumental original recorded in September 1981.   Later in 1981 the band put out an
"official release" of BEGINNINGS (identifiable by its blue cover) containing the eight original tracks
listed above but omitting "Beat It, Mom," which the band had rejected as stylistically incompatible.
Some of the "official release" tapes also included the four cover songs from CLUB DEMO.
All these variations in the releases of the band's 1981 recordings (when The End was at the height
of their popularity) make collecting The End's 1981 recordings quite confusing.   However, there
are plans for a CD re-release of BEGINNINGS that will contain all 13 of the tracks that ever appeared
on any version of BEGINNINGS or the CLUB DEMO on a single disk.   Nine of these tracks were
already re-mastered in 2001 for inclusion on the FINAL JUDGMENT disk. The vintage albums BEGINNINGS, CONTEMPORARY AMERICAN ACID, and STRIKE THREE were originally released on cassette tape and are currently out of print, as is The End's CLUB DEMO.   However, the album FINAL JUDGMENT: BEST OF THE END contaims a selection of 16 studio vintage recordings made by The End between 1981-1983, re-mastered from the original four-track master tapes and released on CD in 2001 by Brain Damage Records.   FLASHBACK is the title of The End's second CD on the Brain Damage label, released in 2003.   The album features the band's first new studio recordings since 1983, with tracks that encompass new original songs, brand new recordings of four vintage original songs, and studio recordings of some of the band's favorite cover songs.   PSYCHEDELICIOUS is The End's final CD, and widely regarded as their best studio recording.   The disk contains entirely brand new original material recorded in 2004 and 2005 when the reunited band was in their prime. The LIVE COMPILATIONS are recordings of live performances by The End, originally recorded on the dates shown above.   These live recordings were packaged and circulated exclusively for Friends of The End.   In 2008 Brain Damage Records offered a special release of the three-disk live album NIGHT OF THE LIVING END, which assembled a variety of live recordings made between 2003 and 2006.   NIGHT OF THE LIVING END is the best-produced of all these live compilations.   However, like all of the older live compilations, NIGHT OF THE LIVING END is only available to Friends of The End.   The sound quality of all these live recordings is inferior, so they are not offered for sale to the general public, although short portions can be heard on the sound samples page.   For information about the three The End CDs that are available for public sale, click here. |
