Kidnapping
Ok, this is probably the most well known VHS trumpet tradition. Since 1999 the trumpets have
traditionally kidnapped their freshman and first year members in the wee hours before a major
tournament. The members are taken from their homes, without any prior notice, dressed in costumes,
and forced to perform tasks given by the returning members. Food or some other reward is usually
given near the departure time for the tournament. The golden part about this tradition is that it
promotes unity among the section while providing amusement for the whole band as well as the
surrounding community.
Tee Shirts and Good Luck Charms
Starting this year (2000) the VHS trumpets have created Section Tee Shirts whics were given out
before our first competition. In past years good luck charms ranging from lighters to action figures
have been collected by the section.
Dress up nights
Since the beginning of time the VHS trumpet section has come to Wednesday night practices in
costumes. The first Wednesday dress up of the year is usually “Kriss Kross” dress up night. This
comes from the backwards clothing trend of the early 1990’s. in mid season the trumpets have made
appearances in drag as well as Mafia clothing, the themes are usually left up to the Section Leader’s
imagination. The last Wednesday night practice of the season has been left to Military clothing for the
past 5 years. Activities relating to the costume theme are also associated with Wednesday night
practices.
Barking
At all practices VHS trumpets bark (like a dog) when the whole section has reset. The section leader
says something like “Trumpets, Set!” and the section replies in unison with a bark. This is believed to
originate from the whole Snoop dogg era.
Morning practices
During practices that take place in the morning before a competition, VHS trumpets
NEVER play.
Sectionals and the Trumpet Tree
After School, Pre game, and pre competition sectionals are always held at the trumpet tree which is
located at the south east corner of the VHS quad. We always warm up with exercises which we have
given dirty titles to and occasionally play red rover and mike dog piles.
