WHY PAUL CAN'T FORGET YESTERDAY

Sir Paul McCartney and Yoko Ono are at odds over his most famous song.

The former Beatle has spoken of his disappointment that John Lennon's widow has refused to allow his name to be first on the credits for Yesterday.

The 1965 classic, which was written by Sir Paul in tribute to his mother who died of cancer, has always been attributed to the Lennon-McCartney partnership.

Because Lennon's name appears first, Miss Ono has reaped more profits from that song than he has, Sir Paul claimed.

He said he had asked her to change the credit to McCartney-Lennon but she refused.

Sir Paul is still bound by the terms of a copyright contract he signed at 20 which set up the Lennon-McCartney songwriting partnership.

He tried to reverse the names when The Beatles Anthology, a book written by the surviving members of the group, was published last October.

"I asked as a favour if I could have my name before John's on the Anthology credits for Yesterday , and Yoko refused," Sir Paul told Radio Times. [This is not published in The Radio Times]

"I could question her but I'm a civil person and life isn't long enough.

"I'd prefer to walk in the park, have fun." He added: "At one point Yoko earned more from Yesterday than I did.

"It doesn't compute, especially when its the only song that none of the Beatles had anything to do with."
