YOU BACK GEORGE TRIBUTE
By Dominic Mohan, in 'Bizarre' showbiz column
Looks like my campaign to have GEORGE HARRISON'S My Sweet Lord re-released is paying off after record bosses held top-level talks yesterday.
An EMI spokesman told me, "No decision has been made but it is under discussion."
Hundreds of you emailed me to support my bid to bring back the 1971 No 1 as a tribute this Christmas. Many of your messages suggested that the proceeds from record sales should go to cancer charities.
James Mitchell, from Loughborough, Leics, whose granddad died of cancer, said, "I would certainly buy the record if the money was going to the right place."
Marjorie Holder, from Bolton, Lancs, said: "I am with you all the way. It would be the greatest tribute to George."
And Rod Lastra, from Winnepeg, Canada, said: "My Sweet Lord should be re-released as a single for Christmas in order to commemorate George's passing."
[NB. The song was later rereleased as a single, breaking the world record for the longest amount of time between one song being no 1 twice. It may not have been completely down to the newspapers campaign. The proceeds went to George's charity, The Material World Foundation.]
