Here is proof of that Indian massacre of 1695.  This sign found on
Woburn St. in Billerica reads:  John Rogers Homestead.  Near
this spot stood the John Rogers Homestead, which was destroyed
in the Indian Massacre of 1695, and the entire family killed.

Now what I'm wondering about this sign is this:  Why was the
part "and the entire family killed" whited out?  Probably
because later on it was discovered that some of the members
of the Rogers family had not been killed - that some of them
either escaped or were taken as prisoners by the Indians.

A common practice back then - the Indians usually took the
young children of white settlers to replace their own children
who had died during their battles with the white settlers and these
white children they in turn raised as Indian children.  The white
children would be given to an Indian family to raise as their
sons or daughters.

It makes one wonder if that may have happened to the
John Rogers family.  Unfortunately, there are no sources that
complete the story.
