TIMELINE

12 year-old Tre Cool joined The Lookouts
In 1988, Billie Joe Armstrong and Mike Dirnt formed the band "Sweet Children", with John Kiffmeyer (a.k.a. Al Sobrante) on drums
17th October 1988, Sweet Children performed their first show at Rod's Hickory Pit in Vallejo, California
Two months after their first show, Sweet Children performed at a high school party along with The Lookouts. One slight 'problem', only five kids turned up and they left after the first song. There was also no electricity so they had to play using a generator and candlelight. Lawrence Livermore, a member of The Lookouts, ran his own independant label called 'Lookout! Records' and after seeing Sweet Children perform immediately offered them a deal.
In 1989, Sweet Children recorded their first EP, "1000 Hours". A few weeks previously, they decided to change their name to "Green Day"
In April 1990, Green Day released their first album, "39/Smooth". Just before the summer they recorded a 4-track EP called "Slappy", which was followed by the EP, "Sweet Children". They then departed for their first national tour later in the summer
In 1991, "1039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours" was released on CD, which included the tracks from all their previously released EPs
After returning from the tour (end of summer 1990), John Kiffmeyer left the band to attend college. Since The Lookouts weren't particularly active, Tre Cool started to play with Green Day as a temporary replacement. It worked out so he joined the band permanently.
In 1991, the band toured locally and recorded their second album "Kerplunk!" - by this time they already had a large fan following
