2. Exclusive Interview with Yahoo Music
"American Idiot" is set aside from the rest of our records and, it's something to be really proud of and something that kind of stirs up discussion at the same time. TC: I think we felt that it was the time of our career to really raise the bar even higher……or lower it if you're doing limbo. BJ: We were really just trying to push ourselves, even further than we've ever done before. Uh, you know it's weird to say a rock opera concept record and Green Day in the same sentence but it could be looked as a rock opera, we're not talking about going to Broadway just yet….so we're not turning into 'Fish' all of a sudden…..like we not gonna turn into some long, drawn out jam session for like 20 minutes and people fall asleep, you know we really just wanna get up and perform the record 'cause we don't wanna lose track of that, and get really into the political side and all that and everything gets so serious and it's like you know you definitely wanna go out and have a good time. MD: Even though it's set in like a political climate, the theme in it, the rage and love theme, really carries through each part of it. BJ: The album is sort of about all what's happening in the culture and anything from, you know, CNN, Fox News, to reality television, whether it's war or...um…about administration right now, so it's…uh….and it's sort of felling like you're not representeded in the right way MD: A lot of people outside the United States have this perception that everyone in the United States is represented by the President and, I for one, am not. TC: We don't always have to win everything, you know, America doesn't have to, like, go around and tell everybody, like, that they need to eat freedom fries and that they have to…uh…you know, wear Levi's, and act like Western culture. BJ: It's scary anytime that you, that you start to…uh…throw your opinion around a little bit because, you know, I mean people were afraid to talk about politics but I mean that's sort of what the times that we're in right now… It's really what it is, it's a discussion. It's not about whether who's right or who's wrong, it's more about taking in the information and finding your own individual opinion upon that. You know, it's our opinion, and I think it’s a very American thing to do, especially to do it through art because that's the way we express ourselves the best. I think in rock music a lot of bands have not really been stepping up to the plate so much, you know, without mentioning any names, not really making the great album. With other bands it's difficult, they just don't, they're straight up are not political and I respect that, that's fine, you know, if you wanna make it boring music go ahead…..but I'm just kidding. But no, it's fine, we're not always a political band, this is really the first time we've ever really stepped out and done this. Rock 'n' Roll is supposed to be about rebellion and it's supposed to be dangerous, and….so that's the side that we choose, we're not looking to make everybody happy... -The End- |
