Chapter 1

The following takes place between 12:00pm and 1:00pm, New Years Eve Day.

Jack walked through the dark corridor, leading into CTU headquarters. The day before had been quiet with only a few raised security concerns, but nothing so big as a year ago. He still remembered the words he had to utter to Audrey Rains on the hour he had found out about the conspiracy. “We have to take down the president of the United States.” Those words echoed in his head as though they had been recorded and could never be erased. That was the hour he had lost all faith in a competent government. What kind of country would allow a man like Charles Logan to become president? He had allowed innocent people to die. He had been accomplice to the assassination of David Palmer, the former president and the only reason Jack continued to believe there might be some good left to keep fighting. He had to stop thinking or he would be forced to remember the terrible hour that he had found out his friend was shot. Jack paused and shut his eyes, wishing he didn’t have to remember it. All goodness died with David, and all of Jack’s faith was buried with him.

A security guard caught his eye and he only nodded a greeting. There was a bad feeling growing in the pit of his stomach. Today wasn’t going to be like the other days, the easier days where he sat at a desk, looking over paperwork. He could feel the tension, the same tension he felt just before David’s assassination. He stepped into a pool of dim light and was surrounded by the ringing of phones and the blend of voices, speaking in urgency. Jack wasn’t surprised when Bill Buchanan, the head of CTU came bounding down the stairs from his office, a look of panic on his face. “Jack, come with me, we have to talk,” Bill turned, leading them to the situation room. The moment Jack stepped in all went silent. Chloe sat with her hands in her lap, and the lap top on the table in front of her. Audrey sat next to her and gazed very briefly in Jack’s direction. Bill spoke in a voice that kept everyone fully attentive, including Jack.

“We received a call a few minutes ago, informing us that there will be an attack sometime today here in Los Angeles.” He looked at Jack as though expecting him to speak up, he didn’t. He knew this was coming, and he dreaded the arrival. “The call was anonymous, but someone has been detained. A man by the name of Todd Kelly, according to the caller this man has information about the attack.”

“Who’s bringing him in?” Jack asked after he was sure he had taken in enough of the information to speak.

“Curtis and Sean.”

Bill then looked directly at Jack. “Jack, you’re going to interrogate Todd Kelly.” That was all Jack had to hear. He knew Bill was assigning jobs to the others in the room, but he didn’t care. “This is priority one so lets get on it.”

Everyone left the room, including Jack who intercepted Chloe on her way to her station. “Can you get me Todd’s profile?”

Chloe looked up, her lap top hugged to her chest. “Yeah. When do you need it?”

“Before Curtis gets in. Can you do that?”

Chloe nodded and made a beeline to her station. Audrey passed her, but slowed upon hearing the conversation. She sped up when it ended, avoiding Jack’s eyes. He turned. “Audrey?” He called after her. She paused and only turned part way to look at him beneath her lowered eyes.

“Jack, we both have work to do.”

“I know that,” he breathed and made his way towards her. “Just tell me--”

The conversation ended when Curtis burst in with a hand cuffed man in his grip. A wave of cold swept through the agency, but Jack wasn’t sure if it was only him who had felt it. He didn’t like Todd even though he only caught a glimpse of his face as he and Curtis walked by. Todd didn’t wear any kind of expression, not fear, not pride, not innocence, but Jack felt every kind of emotion he could feel when the suspect passed by him. He backed off and nudged a desk without realizing it. Straightening, he approached Chloe who was hastily typing away on her computer with frustration furrowing her eyebrows. “I’ve searched all the main data bases, but I can’t find anything, Jack,” she told him, pulling up window after window after window until her screen looked like it had been attacked by a virus. “Todd Kelly doesn’t exist.”

Jack came around to bend over her shoulder. “Keep looking, Chloe. I need to know everything there is to know about this guy.”

“I’ll see what I can do,” she replied in a tone of exhaustion before going back to her search.

Jack could feel sweat on his brow as he walked in the direction of holding room 7 where Todd Kelly would be interrogated. He stood in front of the door. Something was holding him back, a bad feeling that grew hot in his gut. He had to ignore it. Todd knew something about the terrorist attack. For all Jack knew Todd was one of the terrorists. He keyed in the password, and pushed the door open, demanding authority the minute he entered, but Todd didn’t cower nor did he cringe upon seeing Jack. He nodded to him in a greeting, and this infuriated Jack enough to approach the table that Todd sat behind and press both hands onto it. “If you want this to be quick and painless you are going to tell me everything you know, right now,” Jack started, trying to look as though he had the upper hand and could do whatever he wanted to Todd.

However, Todd didn’t enhance the feeling. “Jack Bauer, I’ve heard so much about you. It is an honour to finally be meeting the man who took out the former president of the united states. Kudos, by the way, well done.”

Jack’s face melted behind his skin and he straightened. “We received a phone call, claiming that your name was linked with the attack that is going to happen sometime today so start talking or I will make this experience very unpleasant for you. Do you understand me?”

Todd shrugged. “If it’s English, I understand it, well-- it could’ve been German too--”

“Tell me what you know,” Jack demanded in a loud voice that rang throughout the room.

Todd went silent, staring blankly at Jack. “Some people can’t handle it, but you-- I think you can. I guess it just depends on your limit.”

“What are you talking about?” Jack growled.

Todd didn’t have to explain since the moment the words were out of his mouth, he felt a wave of dizziness as though he had been hit by a floodgate of emotions. He stumbled back, confused that he was suddenly seeing double.

Todd stood.

Everything is broken

Everything is broken

Everything is breaking down, breaking down.

Jack felt as though he was spinning and grabbed lamely for the edge of the table.

Everything is bleeding

Everything is bleeding

everything is breaking down, breaking down

Todd eyed Jack.

I pledge allegiance to a country without borders

Without politicians

Watching for my sky to get torn apart

He extended his cuffed arms.

We are broken, we are bitter, we’re the problem

We’re the politicians

Watching for our sky to get torn apart

Come on and break me

Jack pulled his head up, to find that the dizzy feeling had passed.

Entropy and aching

Where have we been aiming?

Everything is fading now

Fading now

He gasped. He suddenly felt as light as air and he faced the surveillance camera.

We are the faded

Splintered and sedated

Everything is fading now

Fading now

Todd watched him with a look of knowing in his face.

I pledge allegiance to a country without borders

Without politicians

Watching for my sky to get torn apart.

We are broken we are bitter

We’re the problem.

We’re the politicians.

Watching for our sky to get torn apart.

Todd slammed his wrists on the table.

Come on and break me

Come on and break me

Jack needed to leave the room. He could feel it suddenly closing in on him as the lights of the cameras blinked their red eyes at him.

Oh!

Oh!

Todd sat, keeping one eye firmly on Jack.

I pledge allegiance to a country without borders,

Without politiciansPoliticians

Politicians

Jack reached the door, and fell against it.

I am broken, I am bitter

I’m the problem, I’m the politician

Watching for my sky to get torn apart.

He didn’t face Todd again, knowing what it might do to him if he did.

Come on and break me

Come on and break me.

Jack practically threw himself out of the interrogation room, breathing so heavily that he was sure he would have a heart attack.

Todd sat perfectly still, and lifted his eyes to the surveillance camera. He wanted Jack to be watching.

Fumbling his confidence and wondering why

The world has passed him by

Hoping that he’s meant for more

Then arguments and failed attempts to fly-- fly

Todd stood and approached the camera as close as he could come to it.

We were meant to live for so much more

Have we lost ourselves

Somewhere we live inside

Somewhere we live inside

We were meant to live for so much more

Have we lost ourselves

Somewhere we live inside.

Todd punched his chest dramatically.

Dreaming about providence

And whether mice and men have second tries

Maybe we’ve been living with our eyes half open

Maybe we’re bent and broken-- broken

Jack felt it again, that familiar dizziness that he had experienced being too close to Todd in the interrogation room. He power walked through CTU, gasping.

We were meant to live for so much more

Have we lost ourselves

Somewhere we live inside

Somewhere we live inside

We were meant to live for so much more

Have we lost ourselves

Somewhere we live inside

He was heading for Bill’s office, and thrust open the door. Bill hung up the phone, and stood.

“Bill?”

We were more then this world’s got to offer

Jack looked back at the door. Had Todd followed him?

We were more then this world’s got to offer.

Bill motioned to the monitor where Todd’s face was clear.

We were more then the wars of our fathers.

Jack pressed his hands on the edge of Bill’s desk.

And everything inside Screams for second life Yeah

Jack’s heart was pounding in his ears, louder then normal as though everyone’s hearts beat in the same rhythm.

We were meant to live for so much more

Have we lost ourselves

We were meant to live for so much more

Have we lost ourselves

We were meant to live

We were meant to live.

“Close the door,” Bill said in a quiet, but urgent whisper.

Jack obeyed and stepped in further. He eyed the monitor where Todd was now sitting, wrists on the table. “Who is this guy?” Jack demanded to know, still trying to shake off a feeling of disorientation.

“He’s our only suspect,” Bill replied. “What information did you acquire?”

Jack stood there, unwilling to tell Bill that he had gotten nothing out of Todd Kelly, because he wasn’t scared of Jack or the agency. “No one can go back in that room.”

“We have no choice, Jack. If you didn’t get--”

“He’s manipulative. Don’t send anyone in there until I get back.” Jack headed for the door.

“Where are you going?”

Jack didn’t respond, and he hoped that Bill trusted him to get the job done as he did with every assignment. Unfortunately for this one, he didn’t know where he was going or what he was going to do. This was the moment Jack hoped would never come. He felt lost and still dizzy even though he was nowhere near Todd Kelly. His pocket vibrated, and he pulled out his phone to take the call. It was coming from Chloe’s station.

“I’ll be right there.” He hung up and strode in the direction of her station. He wasn’t anticipating the information that he was about to get, but none the less he needed it. He came up behind her chair and she spoke without having to acknowledge he was there. Todd Kelly’s profile stared back at him from her screen.

“He used to work inside the white house, Jack. That’s why he was so difficult to trace. I had to break an access code to find this.”

Jack straightened, but was called by Audrey before he could contemplate the profile. “Chloe, print me up a copy.”

“Sure.”

Jack left Chloe to approach Audrey who stood at the sight of him. There was business in her stance, but something else in her eyes, and Jack wanted to avoid them. “What do you have?”

“A trace on the anonymous call made to the Sacramento police force.”

“Do we have a name,” he asked, trying not to sound too impatient with her.

“Not yet, but we have a place. The Mento Hotel. A phone booth is located just outside the doors and that was where the call was made.”

A small wave of relief swept over Jack as he realized that he had somewhere to go, and a lead to find. “Round up the tac team and tell them to stand by. I’m going to that hotel.”

Audrey picked up the phone, but hesitated a moment before placing the phone back on its cradle. “Jack, I need to explain something to you.”

Jack turned because her eyes were trying tricks on his own. “You don’t need to explain anything, Audrey.”

“Yes, I do because you think--”

“It’s not that I think, it’s that I know so don’t tell me. Please-- don’t tell me--”

Audrey’s eyes were glassy, and he pressed a hand to his mouth, wishing she didn’t shut him down the way she did. It was worse then an enemy’s interrogation. “You don’t understand. I wish you could just tell me--”

Walk away, Jack, now’s the best time to walk away, he thought, but he didn’t walk like he really should have. Instead he turned to Audrey and--

I’ve heard talk of blind devotion

Lovers through thick and thin

Lives touched with real emotion

Faithful till the bitter end

Now I must admit that the story’s attractive

I’ve lost in far too many affairs

I’ve seen all the pain that the morning can bring

I need to prove to myself

This is more then a crush

Can you convince me it’s not just a physical rush

On the other side of the agency, Chloe stood, shocked and confused by this. Jack walked around Audrey and pressed a hand into her hair.

Is this love that I’m feeling

Is this love that’s been keeping me up all night

Is this love that I’m feeling

Is this love

Jack stepped away from Audrey as though he had been burned and she turned intrigued.

So many nights in blind confusion

I’ve walked the line of love

Jack extended his hand to Audrey, and she stared blankly at it.

We reach out in disillusion

When one night isn’t nearly enough

Jack pulled his hand back.

Now, I’d like to know that for once in my life

I’m sure of what tomorrow may bring

I’ve heard all your talk

Can I take it to heart

Jack stepped close to Audrey, forcing her gaze on him.

Now look me straight in the eye

Cause tonight is the night

We’ve got to ask each other if the moment is right.

Jack refused to see that the whole of CTU was suddenly agreeing with him.

Is this love that I’m feeling

Is this love that’s been keeping me up all night

Is this love that I’m feeling

Is this love.

Jack turned away from Audrey and weaved his way through the stations. As he walked agents stood, including Chloe.

I’ve tread those mean streets

Blind alleys where the currency of love changes hands

All touch

A hand brushed his and he looked over to see Chloe.

No feeling just another one night stand

I need to know that there’s someone who cares

He took his eyes from Chloe who attempted to sit down. He was gazing at Audrey again.

Could you be the angel to answer my prayers?

Audrey sat as Jack approached her, feeling the intensity press on every bone in his body.

Is this love that I’m feeling

Is this love that’s been keeping me up all night

Is this love that I’m feeling

Is this love.

Chloe raced up to him, taking his hand briskly and placing his com into it. He caught her eyes briefly before they lowered.

Is this love that I’m feeling

Chloe returned to her station and he made his way to the exit, com in hand.

Is this love that’s been keeping me up all night

Is this love that I’m feeling

Is this love

He stared down at the com, gasping.

Is this love.
